Just stumbled across the following and it's a great one. After a long solo jazz blues on guitar, she gets serious and delivers an extended lecture on how to teach yourself how to swing using a metronome. There is a lot of food for thought here:

Remler is a tragic story. She was a heroin addict who died at 32. None of that is obvious from this video. She's a beautiful player with a lot to teach. If you're a blues nazi who doesn't like jazz, skip ahead to 41:40 or so and listen to what she has to say. It's simple and elegant.

Wow I just jumped out of my rut, swinging with her,she just made so much sense.Emily really got to me,she liked to get out there, but play the right notes on time, something I have slipped out of,in a quest for improvisational dreamland.Swinging yeah, something a harp player can really shine on.Thanks Adam and Emily

Funny two great jazz guitar players, one of them being Jimmy Bruno, played a joke on her. One would tell her
you're not playing enough pentatonic stuff another would tell her you're playing too much.

Here's a solo live video. She moves from the flatpick to just fingers--great stuff with that walking baseline--and then back to the pick. This is the stuff I tried to play back in college and just didn't have the mind (much less the fingers!) to play. This is class solo jazz-blues guitar:

Seeing this second video reminds of what Barney Kessel used to say--learn the melody in all positions first.
I don't know if that applies to the harmonica--it's not a guitar 8)

she seems like one of those players who's always thinking, "i'm cooler, i'm faster, i'm hipper, i'm better..." she makes me want to fall asleep. sorry.

Oh. I thought she comes off rather down to earth. No mystery there, just hard work. Sure, there's some 80's flair, but I don't share that observation. Funny.

Either way, some real pearls in there. She reinforces something I read from Carlos del Junco somewhere. "If you practice to fast and make mistakes, you're practicing mistakes." ... Wow

And on top of that some really understandable comparisons between blues/rock and Jazz.

"After that teacher told me I had bad time when I was 18 years old, I went home and cried about it. And then I got a metronome and started working on it....I hold no secrets back: Work with the metronome!...And when it starts to swing, you'll get a good feeling in your stomach....It should be loose. You should be dancing when you're playing."

Seems pretty down-to-earth to me. Maybe her nasal Jersey-girl accent has something to do with that. She reminds me of some tough girls I've known.

The idea of metronomes and practice keeps popping up. The video by Victor Wooton was similar with using to the the 2nd and 4th beat.. and more, but he made a point about weaning yourself from the metronome. Remler is one of the top jazz guitar performers at this point and still practices with it. There is a video out there with Jason using a metronome for practice as well. The idea of using on the 2nd and 4th beat should transfer well to blues players though. As this keeps coming out I have dusted off my metronome...

Yeah, I don't know. She had a fantastic facility with guitar. Such a shame she couldn't chill out. I think she put some massive pressure on herself to meet a misguided view of what a great musician is.

Of course, I have no idea what her deal was...just her sound, it makes me think of other guys I do know. And for all I know (and more likely), it's me that has the misguided view of what a great musician is. I'll shut up now... what a mess
