We needed to fill some time at a benefit show yesterday, so two former bandmates and I did a trio set with bass, drums, and harp.
"Pawnshop Bound" sounded badass.
Have you ever tried this configuration?

This is what I would want to do...a trio with just bass and drums! Michalek/Strone was just bass, drums, and harp.
I would do rock, though. I am so sick of guitar players....
Actually, my preference would be keys and drums. The keys could cover the bass line ---------- Mantra Customized Harmonicas My Website

I kinda like your thinking there Mike. Keyboard & harp has always sounded like a very dynamic combination to me. ----------

The bass player in Michalek/Strone aka Buddha's Groove was Mahlon Hawk, who now lives in Denver and is also a former bandmate of mine. He is a very fine, articulate bass player, and I think that is what it takes to make the trio thing work.
The players in the pic are Mike Ray and Mike Wysocki, who now plays bass for Dan Treanor's band which finished 3rd overall in Memphis IBC this year. They are both very talented.
It was fun. It was impromptu and spontaneous. None of us had ever tried it before, but we were laughing and high-fiving when it was over.

Chris Strone was the bassist in Michalek/Strone. Mahlon Hawk was the bass player in Buddha's Groove.
I only point this out in case someone thinks it is Mahlon on the CD. Most the YT clips I've seen are not with Strone, but a lot of the audio Chris posted was.
Mahlon is an awesome bass player! I only met him once, very early on with his jamming with Chris. I met Strone a few times, but we never hung out or anything.
I think I've jammed with both. ---------- Mantra Customized Harmonicas My Website

Yes, Mahlon is a highly skilled bass player. He is perfect for a trio because his bass lines are so dynamic and fluid.
The players in this video are me, Steve Mignano, Bruce Collins, and Mahlon Hawk. Not a trio, but it shows off Mahlon's blues chops.
Mahlon is so deep in the groove you couldn't yank him out with a mule. This was a couple years ago, and he now plays with several top bands in the region, including Meniskus.
Listen to Steve on guitar... amazing tone and virtuosity. He is now touring internationally with Cassie Taylor, and he has his own band based in NOLA.
