Paul Butterfield over all others. He stood on the shoulders of giants and brought blues harmonica playing to the heavens. Most who try to stand on Butter's shoulders get nose bleeds and fall off.

I used to think lil walter, only harp soloist with a no.1 hit juke which alot of guys copy up to 90% right on.Big Walter gets my vote.Playing since very young, making a meager living all along, with a few side jobs for rent money.

He was happy to become a sideman, and could literally play with anyone,of all genres,or go solo on the streets.Hard smokin and drinkin man with a tone from another universe.Yes thats whats sets him apart, the nuances of electrified harp, that he made use of,wildly in control, are amazing. The man's musical talent was phenominal,as many others, but the tone, all the way up and down the harp, many line up to try,but he can't be duplicated.Mexicans loved his la cucaracha, nobody could cut his head when he felt like turning the heat up.

Definately speaking of diatonic harp here.Larry Adler Stevie Wonder and Toots rate the best chro.,but I ain't heard them all.

"I like Paul deLay"

As do I, Larry. In fact, the only reason I would go with BW over DeLay is the "he squeezed out more using less" opinion. Delay moves me to no end. I can listen to his body of work for days on end (and have, in random rotation). His use of effects (both electronic as well as his own) is fantastic. But, for the resources available at the time, I think BW wrung it out.

But, I could gush over any number of the Greats.

Tricky one Frank.

If 'Best' is just defined in terms of technical ability and say for instance Howard is best new and Little walter is best old.

How would they cope in trying to replicate each others style. Of course Howard would have the advantage of being well versed in modern harmonica techniques having personally developed a lot of them. But then again Howard would have to try and replicate the tone, phrasing and nuances of LW's playing.

Does this advantage apply to players of other instrument violin for instance. Is a modern violin player much more advanced technically that a modern player?

Just alcohol fuelled ramblings:)
