I never said he was black or any other color. I said he was putting down whites. He made offensive, racist statements.
He is totally ignoring forum rules. The rules were put in place to keep this forum peaceful and enjoyable for all of us that enjoy the Blues and Harmonica.

Not "Hip" at all IMO! I accept his views (I don't agree with them) but not his racist BS. Very closed mind.

ZZ

Always liked them, but never thought of them as a blues band, seemed more rock to me, but there you go, clearly blues influenced.
Enjoyed the velcro fly; the sound, style and clip made me think of Devo, another band I'm not ashamed to admit to having enjoyed in the eighties.
Ah, the eighties, those were the days.

Wow Fred Gomez, that was over the top. I clicked on this thread to listen to some ZZ Top and got your rant as I scrolled down, that sucked. Maybe you should have put Clapton's racist comments or anyone else's for that mater in it's own thread. Hopefully your just having a bad day.

Paulbunyn, don't worry, we are keeping an eye on the thread since tempers seem flared up, but we are slow to react on weekends and days that end in 'y'. (I'm not trying to be dismissive, just break the tension a bit.) :)

It looks like Fred edited his first comment after some constructive criticism (or just after doing some pondering on his own). I disagree with most what he's written, but I think he's within forum rules at this point. He certainly doesn't like ZZ Top, or Eric Clapton, and he cites race reasons for it. I don't find his argument compelling for ZZ Top. Clapton, on the other hand,... I'd disagree with him on Claptons musicianship though, although always found most of Clapton's music doesn't really speak to me, but that's my personal taste.

But this is a thread about ZZ Top, so that really belongs in another thread. Fred, like I said before, if you want a thread about race relationships, start one that's focused on that. In internet terms, you are bordering on 'threadjacking', which isn't as bad as being a troll but is worse than being a blues player.

I find the best way to deal with threads that wander off is to point it out, and see if that refocuses people's attention, then just ignore it unless it becomes habitual. (I've been known to wander a bit menta... ooo, squirrel!

Seriously though, Fred, some very good debate could be had on the subject in a thread more suited to it. You are welcome to start one if you want as long as everyone sticks to the forum creed. People who want to talk about ZZ Top can go back to talking about their music and skip that thread if it's not for them. (I was going to skip the ZZ Top thread entirely. I could never tell if they were shtick or what. I remember as a kid liking 'Legs' and 'Sharp Dressed Man' but I also remember my mom thought they were pretty misogynistic, but again, we can take that up in another thread if you want.

And for some comic relief:

I didn't listen to the Eric Clapton video because I don't care what he said. That doesn't make a bit of difference in my life!
Fact is The only reason I know who Eric Clapton is is because he is a VERY talented sucsessful musician.
This isn't the first time an idolized musician has said or done something that someone or a group of people didn't like. When they say or do something stupid everyone gets bent out of shape.
They are humans! They are going to do stupid things.
Thats what we do!
Seriously no one is perfect.
As far as the ripping music off thing. Really?
Doesn't everyone already know that!
Being influenced by a riff or a grove isn't really the same thing as coping a song! IMHO
Fred isn't completely wrong about ZZ top either.
ZZ top was one of my favorite bands untill MTV.
They figured out how to munipulate MTV to make a lot of money. I saw them live during the 70's and into the 80's and their music changed for the worse for my liking. So I just listen to the music I like.
Am I mad at ZZ top for "selling out"?
THEY ARE FUCKING RICH!
And they have cool beards!
Heck some people have figured out how to munipulate you tube for financial benifit and then teach their friends how to do it.
Nothing surprises me!

How seriously can you take someone who always types in lower case? Maybe a reference to a certain appendage size?

Can't quite figure where the dude is coming from myself. Some of the stuff is so over the top, I just figured it was someone trying to get a rise from forum members, which I guess would be called trollin' right? There's even an entry where he explicitly denies he's doing this.

The whole "black bluesman ripped off by the white rock and rollers" theme has gotten so played, that I'm not sure there's anything new or fresh to be discussed. I'm sure some did. I don't really understand his take on it though. Be pissed about it, but Led Zep gets a pass (if I understood him correctly)? How is that a consistent position? I love Led Zep but didn't Willie Dixon (or his estate) sucessfully sue over Whole Lotta Love?

Sounds more like personal taste to me: "I like this band/artist so they WEREN'T ripping anybody off, I don't like this band/artist so they WERE ripping people off".

Anyway, that's what I took away from it. Well, that and the whole racial blast thing. Which, for the life of me, I can't figure out how was considered acceptable in the context of the forum creed. But I'll confess to having lost all feel for where THAT line is.

I think Willie Dixon lost that law suit!
If the same suit was in court today he would have a better chance of winning probably?
I'm not sure though? It's been a while sence I've heard anyone talk about that.

I like ZZ because their music rocks.

I also like the subtle and fun stage choreography between bass and guitar.

It shows that they don't take themselves too seriously and have a lot of fun.

You might be right chromatic. I don't know. I seem to remember watching or reading an interview with Page and Plant where they said (and I'm paraphrasing here): We loved Wille and all of those guys, and we listened to them over and over again. If some of thier riffs managed to find their way into our stuff we certainly weren't trying to actively plagarize them. In any case, we're happy to pay him his due and credit him.

So I just assumed Dixon had won or it was settled.

BTW: i'm not offering an opinion of the disingenuousness of Plant/Page or lack thereof....I just have a recollection of that interview.

I find the key to diplomacy is to find another forum, somewhere on the web, preferably one where the traffic is so high they don't notice one crazy mofo ranting lunacy (like Fark.com) and vent there under a different username than you use anywhere else on the planet.

You should have seen my parking rant the other day.

Let's see how many band names we can come up with using only Fred's above post. I'll start:

1. Robitussin Pink
2. Blackeyed Scotch
3. Grape Soda Reefer
4. The Grape Soda Reefer Blues Association

etc., etc.....

No, you are not alone...

billy shines said, "i know im a new guy and this is gonna make some people mad but its the proverbial truth as i see it. the 90s never shoulda happened. anyone playing that stupid heroin music from 20 years ago needs to go life shopping and find new idols. theres two forms of american music: blues and shit. all the good blues songs have already been written you have nothing to contribute to the genre. i like british blues but i cant stand eric clapton if a band member so much as mentions his name they are fired to be continued. "

I see a similarity, does anyone else?

By the way, I always thought of ZZ Top as blues-rock...

I've noticed that. fred_gomez likes Lep Zepplin, though; I don't think billy_shines did.

Maybe they're cousins.

Willie Dixon sued and settled out of court over "Whole Lotta Love." I seem to remember that he took the money and funded music programs in poor schools. Funny thing is, Steve Marriott and Ronnie Laine ripped off the same tune a couple of years before "Whole Lotta Love." The Zeppelin version owes as much to the Small Faces version as it does to the Dixon/Muddy Waters original.
