wow ok i guess no one cared haha.

I cleaned em with the denture cleaner stuff and it sort of worked but when I took em out there was still bits of the cleaner in the harps. some gunk did come out though.

As for being cleaner I don't really know because its like changing spit and skin particles for denture cleaning ones.

and my 8 hole draw got stuck I managed to fix it though. Maybe ill be one of those guys that never cleans there harps so at least that way no one will ever want to play my harmonicas besides me.

Soap and water or toothpaste and rinse rinse rinse.

Now silverharp what I really am looking forward to you posting are your impressions of the two marine bands that had: had the combs sealed, been properly gapped, and tuned. I think playing a well set up M.B. will blow your mind and turn you off crappy harps.

I hope you accepted the kind and generous offer from another forum member whose name escapes me of an A and a C harp free of charge.

Please lemme know what you think of those harps.

Sherwin

And don't beat them like a rented mule, though an M.B. pushed hard does sound good sometimes! Sorry bob.

Silverharp, I haven't used denture cleaner, so I didn't venture a guess. I do use a sonic cleaner that I bought from Turboharp.com. I think it was $40. It takes about 5 minutes. It fits the workings for about 4 harps in it at once, and does a pretty good job. Remember, the main goals are this:

1. Keep the inside of the harp sanitary and so that you don't inhale pieces of gunk that break off.

2. Keep the reeds swinging freely.

3. Keep the covers, particularly where your lips touch the harp, clean. Dried on gunk is rough on the lips.

4. Keep your harps looking snazzy!

For quick cleaning or cleaning when I'm not home, I also use little craft picks like these:

Craft Picks

($2.49 for a 750 count bag, although I think actually I may have found mine cheaper at a craft store. I'm still on my first bag.) I don't like toothbrushes on the reed plates. It's too easy to snag a bristle on one of the reeds. They are fine for coverplates and combs though. I use the craft picks to pull visible gunk out of holes. If you are doing this on the quick without disassembling everything, make sure you hold the harp up with the holes facing down. You want the gunk to fall out of the harp as it comes loose, not fall in! The key is to have something that is harder than the gunk so it can break it up, but softer than the metal so it doesn't scratch things. Craft picks are basically a step up from toothpicks, which can work in a pinch but are more prone to snapping.

It's also nice to have a cleaning cloth. Seydel has a nice one that comes with some of their harps. I think you can buy it separately too, but I can't find a link. It's a type of microfiber polishing cloth. Some jewelers will have them, but you DON'T want one that has silver polish on it, so ask if theirs do or not. Wipe the outside of your harps off with it before you put them away. Anything that does get dried on, use a craft pick on and then wipe off. Don't worry about getting the insides of your harps shiny, just gunk free. Metal oxidizes over time. Leave that oxidization in place on brass. It actually protects the layers underneath.

Seydel Maintenance Tips

If my harps drop on the floor I use the five second wipe it off rule, or if it's a floor that is less spic and span then I use a clorox wipe to wipe off the cover.

@Sherwin: The harps FMwoodeye gave me are awesome I like them a lot there easy to play and really high quality.

I still think I like plastic combs better. but that might change after playing a while longer. I'm still really new to Harmonica.

I notice on the good harps there's less breath escaping and just more harp sound.

but I don't think the Huangs I have are that bad either.

Thanks again FMwoodeye for the harps!

If your reading this that is.

Silverharp, Thanks for responding, so I guess "blow your mind" is a little over the top, yet the less breath escaping, and more harp sound are certainly two good features for a harmonica to have. Harps such as those will make just about everything you want a harp to do for you easier to do. Lucky you!

Sounds to me like you're having fun with all your harps, carry on!
