I was cruzing the interwebs earlyier today as a welcome break from packing up the house (Pittsburgh here we come!), and hit upon this page (http://ashbass.com/AshBassGuitar/Zoom/direction.html) that showed me something so simple, yet still something I had completely not thought of until I saw it. Put the Amp simulator patch BEFORE the modulation, delays, and reverb effects (and in that order too)! So, I said "huh!", and I jumped over to my G3, hit the "total" button and quickly rearranged my effects order to get it in that order. And lo and behold (!), it made a HUGE difference. So, any of you mG3 users (or indeed any one who uses a multifx pedal with switchable fx order), give it a try.
Oh, yeah, and also be sure to mess with the Cab simulation. It has as much, or more, to do with the "flavor" of overdrive you get from a particular amp sim than the "model" of amp being simulated. I've found that using unconventional amps (for harp) mixed with a different cab instead of their own can sound wonderful. My personal fav combo on the G3 is now the "FD Vibro" (Fender Vibroverb) amp model with a "US Blues" (Fender Bassman) cab sim.
Cheers!

That's actually the "recommended" effects chain order, which is why they are laid out that way in the manual.
Effects Chain Order is a good tutorial on the whys.
That said, frakking around with the order can result in some unique sound mangling too, so it's not a hard and fast rule. Whatever works best for the "sound" you want!
I like the Vibro model best on the G3 as well, though I'm using the stock cab. The fender wasn't punchy enough for me. The Alien gives quite a punch though too.

Actually, the effects chain order thing is WHY I never thought to put the "amp" before the delays and modulation fx. I never thought of the amp Sims in multifx unit as "distortion fx", which they clearly are, but rather thought them to be used as a "virtual" amp. I guess it's a case of "mental block" just because they are called "amp" Sims and not "distortions" (which are a separate category in all multifx units I know of). But yeah, come to think of it, the two are functionally identical in these types of units, and so should be placed appropriately in the chain... I wonder if folks who use such pedals as the harpbbreak or harp commander would similarly benefit from changing their fx orders? ----------

Ah, I see what you mean. Makes sense. I've been using a Zoom G7 for guitar for years and it's the same FX chain (being zoom) so I never really changed (unless I'm frakking around randomly to see how mangly you can get)
I think there's a point with MultiFX though when you stop trying to just emulate "traditional" amps sounds and just look at it as a way to shape new sounds.

I agree with your statement there, 100%. I never wanted the pedal to emulate "the" sound of a particular amp, I only wanted it to make a good sound for harp... These pedals do that really really well, but you have to learn how to get them to do it at the best of their ability... Each brand has its own quirks, and I've had to change my approach on the G3 vs the DigiTech RP I had before... I think the G3 is way more versatile and customizable, but you've got to be better at programming it (than with an RP) in order to get the sound right...---------
