my dad was stationed in Birmingham,UK in WW2 in the army/airforce....he told me about the contempt the yanks and the brits had for each other, with fights in dance halls&pubs....but with time,as the war grew into the allies favor....a mutual admiration emerged...ending with VE day....it seems that the threads have not been locked as much of late.....would do you think?????same situation?

I'm having trouble seeing your analogy here George. Are you saying you think there was animosity between the two sides of the drink here on the forum up until recently?

I gotcha now.

I too still have relations across the pond. Mainly in northwestern Ireland.

Mmmmmm....I think to a certain extent that the majority of forum members here have gotten a feel for what each individual forum member thinks, prefers, and leans toward for the most part. We all have our schools of thought, our tastes, and our techniques. I still think occasionally that some forum members try to goad or outwit each other, but it may be simply for the goal of trying to better understand one another. Overall, I'd say Pax Romana is the general status quo here for now. We debate certain things because honestly, it's our duty to do so. And yes George, I'd say the analogy between GI's and Tommies post D-Day is probably accurate.

Or perhaps all the controversial stirrers (colourful characters) have been kicked off the forum or left.

Don't mind a bit of controversy and drama, myself. Can be quite entertaining.

Half of my ancestors came from the Isles via Bavaria, half came here from Germany via the Isles. While I have no doubt there was animosity between armies- this is as old as war- I have personally not felt any friction between my friends across the water either here nor on any other forum where we intersect. Here or on several other forums I visit. In fact, granted a lotto win, one of our plans is to come visit Europe starting with the Isles and some very fine folks there I have been friends with on Blindman's for most of a decade now.

A thing I noticed some years ago about many European folks which I came to respect was that, at least with certain members on a few different forums, once these cats made the decision to learn an instrument, they would learn the living hell out of it in a very dedicated and focused way. This is much different than my own haphazard methods, which took me a lot longer to make progress with.

So be assured at least from here, no worries mate!

Could it be us Yanks try too hard?

After all, real work, isn't it for "Only Fools and Horses"?

Never had any probs with my US harp friends. I grew up in the 50's reading US comics. I was so jealous of your bicycles and the paperboys who just threw the papers on the lawn. I wanted so bad to get one of those wrist watch crystal radios, the fishing rod set, the hypno-disc, the x-ray specs, the crewcut hairstyle and Chino trousers (Slacks). :)
