When I get going on stage, I inevitably break into a sweat. I'm usually working pretty hard with lots of energy. I prefer to be a little more dressed up, so that just adds to the problem.

Do you try to manage the sweat somehow, or just sweat away?

You're kidding, right? I take a really hot shower, as hot as can stand it, just before I get dressed. It makes me sweat like a pig. It's part of the show. I thought everybody knew that.

I saw a guy who brought a fan to a gig, which is why I am asking... I always figured sweat was part of it, but never thought to change my environment on stage...

Personal taste. If you want to keep a little cool use a fan. If not, don't :) But a towel or something might help to keep sweat out of your eyes.

King, I'm folically challenged like you.

When's it 100 degrees in Reno, and I'm playing outside, I use either a Halo Protex beanie/skull cap or a EVS sweat beanie. I have several of each.
If I had to choose one, it would be the Halo, I think it's more comfortable.

They work well keeping sweat from running down my face and most importantly they prevent 3rd degree burn to my head.

They have become pretty popular and there's a shit load of brands to choose from.

I was looking at some SweatVac caps recently, they have a nice selection, but haven't tried them yet.

Now if we could just figure out how to mount it to a harp mic, we would have it made!

I recommend those salt rocks sold at health food stores for antiperspirant.

They do help minimize moisture and amazingly take all the odor away.

Curiously, since I feel so comfortable on any stage and am "cool" about it (one reason I was called "The Iceman"), I very rarely have this problem unless caused by high humidity and hot stage lighting.

@fred, Thanks for the tip. I can't use antiperspirants anyway, cause they peel the skin off me. I'll try that milk of magnesia.

when I use a fan, it helps keep my face more dry. nothin' more fun than a river of sweat pouring into your eyes during a solo!

It depends on your look. I think, and it's been awhile since I poled the young ladies, but if you are skinny and 'hot' it's okay. If you are old and fat (or at all wrinkly) it's disgusting. It's one of those rare sexually based biases that applies to both sexes equally.

I just rep-out a quick set of 100 burpees before I get on stage for my set. Gets the heart pumping and gives you a nice "baseline" of sweatiness

the salt rocks are actually aliminum salts or alum. which i also have and allergic reaction to. apply the milk of magnesia out of the shower it takes a bit of time to dry.it will also dry your feet in a hurry to you can get sock on and get out in a hurry. its good to have on the road. a small capfull can settle the stomach from road food bad coffee etc. its also a mild laxative. avoid malox it has aluminum.

That is just bizarre... Milk of magnesia??? And apparently it works...

I don't know if I want to stop sweating that much, but since the underarms go first.... Why not...

I might just leave a towel out front so the ladies can mop my head for me...

Jeez, I can't believe this thread.... I wipe a lick of Mennen Speed Stick on my armpits before the gig and away I go.

Not for nothing, but three things I hate on the bandstand when I am playing with my band:

1. Electric Fans- The vornados, the clip on ones, even that industrial yellow one that RD pictured, they are for weenies and drummers.

2. Sitting in chairs - just the pits in stage presence. Only if you really have too, like a physical issue, your instrument demands it (ie:piano) , or you are royalty like James Cotton.

3. Cargo shorts - Unless you are a juvenile wunderkind, never wear cargo shorts on stage if you are over 13. Trust me, you will look ridiculous, and believe me, you definely do not look cool.

As Elvis says,"If you are cool on the inside, you will be cool on the outside."
Thank you, thank you very much....

Cargo shorts are okay only if you have some really savage leg tats.

Music stands make you look like a Jr High School band class.

As far as sweat, carry a clean towel in your gig bag for face/head sweat. It makes you look like your workin' hard.

6SN7, have you ever played (or seen) a summer festival? There are big fans on the stage.

Stubbies, t shirt, thongs, beer, some bourbon for under the arms etc, but you better not play crappy dressed like this.

Yes Rick, I have played on a big stage. Just 2 weeks ago I played the Mystic Blues Festival and there were no large fans. It was a very hot and steamy weekend .
And if they have been used at festivals I have gone to , I have no recall of them, which is a good thing.
I can see those being used at the side of the stage , but when I see someone who has a clip on fan on their mic stand, I think "weenie."

The towel is an excellent idea and your music stand comment makes me laugh.
