Went to opening night of a blues festival, in San Miguel de Allende Mexico last night (not the major SMA international jazz & blues festival, a small one with mostly local acts). A middle-aged woman shows up with her flute, and from the audience starts playing along to The Thrill is Gone.....and loudly....an organizer leads her up to the band stand and she steps over everyone....but does get off the stage...ok, rude and crude but its just one song....then next band is up and she pulls out her Saxaphone and starts wailing away from the crowd again...unbelievable!! Somehow gets to the stage, is introduced by the band leader as Here's our special guest, what's your name?... the lead guitarist is pushed almost to the corner and she just tries to take over...one band member says something to her and looks like he wants to kill her...but she's impervious and won't get off. Meanwhile I'm having an interesting conversation with her husband who tells me she's got about a 50/50 success rate sitting in on bands....I explain who Gus is and how rude it is....but clearly he's had this conversation before. Finally they turn her mic off and she leaves the stage. My wife sees her in the ladies room and says really cheerfully hey are you in the band? The woman, thinking she has a fan, nods her head and says brightly, yeah I just got in! So my wife says, then how come they shut your mic off for for the last 2 songs you were up there? Wished I had seen her face. Never seen anything like this in my life.
At least she didn't play harp. Gus's name is Barbara Lee and she was in SMA last night!
