I still don't like the sound of overblows.
I still like black music over white.
Discussions about gear are good. Discussions about technique are good. It's all for nothing if you don't have feel.
Cheers,
wolf k.

Are you talking about your overblows or overblows in general? Most people think that once they get the overblow to sound, that is as good as it gets. It takes much practice to get overblows (and overdraws) to blend in like any other note. Actually, once you get control of the overblows, they are the most useful notes on the harmonica. Bending and wailing overblows is an incredible tool. The 6 overblow is crucial for connecting the low and high end of the harmonica played in 2nd position. Over bends are incredibly emotional.

@Wolf:
Who does like the sound of overblows? Overdraws (particularly done by Todd Parrot) are awesome, but if you really don't like 'em, get a X Reed Sub 30 from Brendan Power. It'll rock your world.
Is there such a thing as white music? All modern music is derivative of blues in some shape or form.
Feel is king, but you've got to love and admire the harmonica community. I've never known such a sharing bunch of people. It's not just about them being willing to share. Eager is the word. A very rare and beautiful thing.
Lastly, gear talk is great and harmonicas are the gearheads wet dream!

Hi Wolf,
Let me start w/ a preface-
if you weren't a really fine player i would reject the OB remark out of hand. Buuut.. you're really good so what you say carries weight with me.
i learned to overblow because i'm competitive, wanted to know what all the fuss was about, and thought it would make me a better, more well rounded player.
i've not regretted learning them. i use the 6 OB habitually at every single gig. that's cuz it is a flat third like the three draw bend.
my 6 OB is tonally indistinguishable as being an overblow. my four and five OB could use some work but i'm lazy and don't care.
maybe what you don't like is a lot of Overblows and Overdraws?
All in all, to each his own. i'm rather glad the technique defenders finally, finally, just shut up.
i totally agree w/ your other comments/points.

I think if players were actually REALLY GOOD, and were as proficient in using them as the current top players do(ie:ricci, gussow, del junco) there would really be no reason NOT TO USE THEM as part of a "regular" playing pattern.
Not wanting to use OB because they "don't sound natural" on the diatonic is about as foolish an argument as saying one doesn't "like the sound" of a 4 draw bend in second position. The harmonica was never designed to draw bend, OB, overdraw, etc. Not wanting to learn OB is fine. Learning OB but not incorporating them into ones musical vocabulary is fine, but stating that OB are pointless and foolish to learn because they sound "unpleasant" is just lame IMO!!

Ok, I am no class player, that's for sure. I think I know a good 'over' sound when I hear it, and in my opinion, a bad one is TERRIBLE... Like, don't friggin go there territory... When done real well, and not overdone to hell, I feel they can be pretty dang cool. BUT, often I think something sounds 'wrong'.. That's my uneducated fool opinion. Of course the cats that use them well, I listen to their playing and think "how the f... Did he/she...??."

A "bad" draw bend also sounds awful, and all of us have been there in our learning process! Of course a badly played OB sounds horrific, but the point I am trying to make is that if we can make OB sound as good as the aforementioned players make them sound, I see no reason why people wouldn't jump on the opportunity to use them! Unfortunately, this would require ALOT of work/practice, something that modern society with their "microwave" mentality would have a lot of problems accepting! It's easier to just downplay it!

@Wolf: Apparently you've deleted your confession. Where is it? Confessions are supposed to be some deep dark secret that you've been keeping hidden. I don't see any confession in what you've written, so I can only assume that you've deleted the good stuff and left a couple of tame, reheated truisms that you've been sharing here for years. What happened to the confession part?
