I would like to share my vid. of a great song called ‘Bus Window’ written by Dan Kaplan. It’s such an atmospheric tune. I love Dan’s work and I think he has a unique voice on the harmonica. His vibrato is terrific on the higher harps (very resonant and strong) He is equally at home on lower tuned harmonicas and has a wonderful TB chugging song called ‘back the same day’ He has put some of his work on Youtube which can be found HERE I have recently heard from Dan that he has written 10 new songs and hopes to put them on Youtube (just the harmonica parts) and then will work them up with the addition of other instruments for the finished article at a later date. I can’t wait!

Grey Owl, you are great! Your version is very close to original by emotions, feeling and sound, but you bring your own vision to the song! I like it a lot! ---------- my music

I saw that Grey Owl had posted this a couple of days ago, but I didn't have time to comment then... I've been working on this song ever since I first heard it. I can play it, but I can't make it sound the way Dan does. I've been working on it as a solo harp piece. I've got an old attempt at it somewhere on my YouTube, but I ought to record it again. If I get some time this week, I'll try to do that and upload it here...
Thanks, Grey Owl, for reminding all of us about Dan's music. He's a true genius on the harmonica and a VERY generous, humble, and genuine guy. He deserves more notoriety in the harp community than he currently has. ----------

Dan lives in Austin and has little to no notoriety here, even among us harp players. I think he just likes to play and is not into self promotion. He is very nice and we have performed improvisational duets at my gigs together.

Thanks guys. I totally agree Isaac. I think Dan is a very good, inventive player who has a refreshingly different style of playing and I'm really looking forward to his new material.
From the little contact I have had with him he does seem to be a thoroughly nice guy. If he's not into self promotoion or notoriety that's fine by me - I like that. It adds a little intrigue.
Look forward to your 2nd take on Bus Window, Isaac.
I enjoy this song very much, It captures a mood beautifully. I didn't often play my F harp but now I find myself playing this song quite often which progresses to trying out new ideas. I am finding the higher key harp has opened up new creative possibilities for me. ----------

I quickly recorded a version this morning:
I'm not happy with my playing, but it's the best of the 10 takes I ran through... For those interested in my recording setup, I'm using a pair of small diaphragm condenser mics in xy stereo orientation in conjunction with a single dynamic mic pointed dead center. All mics were in the corner of the room, set back about 2 feet from the back of the harp. Reverbs are from my mixer (Alesis MultiMix 8), and annoying pops are from my crappy digital audio recorder (iKey G3).
Agree with all points about Dan. Head out and buy his albums today if you haven't already. I, too, am eagerly awaiting his next release. ----------

Nice one Isaac! That's not easy to do without the backing. Thanks for listing the equipment. What harp are you using btw, sounds low. I like the contrast. ----------

Thanks guys! I'm using a B harp here (a Golden Melody). Playing the harp lines solo, I found that using a high harp to do this song was, without the backing, a bit too shrill. Too low, however, and you lost the plaintiveness of the song. I tried all my keys, and B seemed to be perfect. I'm pretty sure this is in third position, so I suppose I'm playing in Db as opposed to the original Gb (E harp). The two keys are related, so I suppose that's why a B harp sounds like it fits the song... ----------
