A friend of mine gave me his Shure Spher-O-Dyne microphone, also known as a Shure 533SA. It's from the '70s, I think. I've been playing it through P.A.s and a Fender Blues Deluxe. It's a very good P.A. mic and sounds good through the Deluxe too. It has a bassier sound than most of the Shure stick mics.
People have talked about this mic before in this forum. I've not seen this said about it, though-- It has the greatest tonal variation of any microphone I've ever used.
Cup it tightly, and you get the deepest, thickest sound you could hope for. Loosen the cup a bit, and you get a very noticeable lightening of the sound. Take one hand away completely, and you get a light and airy but still beautiful sound.
The range of tone you can get with various hand positions is incredible. The mic has inspired me to seriously pay attention to tonal variation, à la Walter Horton. I've been guilty of ignoring this aspect of amplified harp. I typically inflict a death grip on the mic and never let go, but this is changing, thanks to the Spher-o-dyne.
I'm going to try to post a photo of the mic; hope I'm doing this right:

The mic is omnidirectional and has a slight tendency to feed back if it's in the monitor mix. I use a screw-on volume control from BlowsMeAway Productions to manage this.

Hi Wolf!
One of those was given to me in the early 80s and was my go to mic for several years. When the screen broke off i wrote Shure company to ask if they had a back room somewhere where they had some leftovers.[Smile] THEY got back to me! They said no such animal, try our green bullet. Best stick mic alive! everything you said about it has been my experience, Wolf. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.
