Here are three solos I strung together to give you an idea of how Nic's new harp amp sounds. It is a custom 3x10 from Mission. 44 watts, with the features of the 32-20 amp but more power. Big tone.
This is from the Mile High Blues Society member party last night at Ziggies in Denver. The band is Bad Brad & The Fat Cats. ---------- -Little Rick Davis The Blues Harp Amps Blog The Mile High Blues Society Tip Jar

From what i hear on the recording, Bruce nailed it! I bet it sounds even better live. Will there be any changes, or does Nic feel the same way ?

Nic is happy with it. No changes to the amp, but now he wants to try a Shure CM bullet mic with it.
In the video he is playing a Turner mic. He also has a Shure 545S and a JT-30 with ceramic element, but no Shure CM or CR. So at the jam on Sunday he'll bring the amp and try my Shure 440SL.

That kid "blows me away"! The whole 1st to 3rd thing in the 3rd segment nailed me. 3 10''s seems ideal as an adequate stage volume speaker configuration. That's one I'd like to try for pragmatic reasons. Good post "Little Rick" ;) ---------- Facebook

The speakers in the amp are two Eminence Lil Buddy ceramics on the bottom and a Jensen P10R alnico on the top.

Nic is a monster player and at 17 shows a lot of professionalism on the stage. He had a reed go out his harp (5 draw I just replaced) is why he made the switch from third to first and I think he did it pretty seamlessly for a non planned change.

Rick, It sounds like Nick and I have the same amps. That was the final speaker configuration I ended up with and one other tweak to bump up the wattage a tad. I love mine too. It is nice to see someone else play the type amp you have so you can hear it from a different perspective.

Just out of curiosity (and I'm writing this on my phone so I haven't had a chance to try Youtubing it myself), have Nic and Jay Gaunt ever cut heads together? ----------

dted, I am not sure the model of his Turner mic. I know it is a ceramic element. I'll find out at the jam on Sunday and let you know.
I played through Nic's Turner mic on Thursday night and I thought it sounded good.... it was slightly darker and a a tiny bit less colorful than my Shure 440SL. We did a dual harps thing with Juke, Nic on the vocal mic and me on the Turner and amp. It is humbling to play on stage with Nic, but still a lot of fun.
BTW... when we had the amp in Bruce's shop last week we measured the output of Nic's various mics as he played. The Turner was WAY high output.
MJ, yep, pretty much the same amp. And this one was built to Nic's request, so both you guys have good taste in amps.
Scott, right after that song Nic handed me the harp and said, "Could you please give this to Scott? I just blew the 5 draw reed."
Tim, I think they met at SPAH in Sacramento a few years ago. Not sure if they "cut heads." I have never, ever heard Nic brag about his playing or compare himself to any other player. He is just not like that.

@Rick
I didn't say Nic was like that. To my knowledge, neither is Jay. Cutting heads is just a term that, to me, means batting solo licks back and forth on a given number. Just to see what each player can come up with. Doesn't necessarily mean competition, just fun. ----------

I've seen Nic play on stage with Rick Estrin a couple times. Saw them play Juke once, swapping fours, to end a Nightcats show here in Denver. It was pretty cool.

Tim, from About.com
Definition: Cuttin' Heads: Also known as "headcutting," the term refers to a competition between musicians where one player will try to outdo another, entertaining an audience by outplaying or outperforming a rival. A time-honored blues tradition, Muddy Waters and his bands were known as dangerous headcutters on the Chicago blues scene.
========================
If you google the term I think you will find that is the common definition for "Cutting heads." That is certainly the meaning I know for it.

Okay .....if the webopinion says that's the accepted definition, I stand corrected. Was really more interested to know if the two youngest and best-known harp phenoms had ever performed together so I might take a look for enjoyment. ----------

I DO know Jay-and have jammed with him. Two distinct and different styles between Jay and Nic-"headcutting" has taken on a slightly toned down moniker these days-though i would still like to see it.

I asked Nic tonight if he knows Jay Gaunt, and he said they are very good friends and have played harp together often. They met in 2008 when Nic was 12. So there's your answer, Tim.

! ! The crowd loves it but at 4:16 Big Jack is looking for Jay to channel some Nick. Just sayin... Headcutting? Not sure I'd defer to about.com on what head cutting means (or much else), even if it is accurate in this case. This reference I would take to be more accurate, which is not the same as correct, but very useful. Johnny Shines describes himself and Johnson staging "headcutting contests," in which they would play guitar simultaneously on rival street corners, trying to steal each other's audiences and so best each other's take of money. Schroeder, Patricia R. (2004). Robert Johnson, mythmaking, and contemporary American culture. University of Illinois Press. p. 62. ISBN 978-0-252-02915-8.

In this video Nic does some very fine 1st position blues work. I don't know that I've heard better.
Nic is using my rig (Bassman and Shure Bullet) without the Kinder pedal. This is at the jam last night.

Tim, here is a good example of trading fours at the jam last night. This ain't "cutting heads."
The guy on lap steel is HeXx Henderson, a touring pro from Denver who drops in to the jam when he comes in off the road. Dude is a wicked player and a certified gear freak. He always has a different and interesting amp when he comes to the jam. Last night it was a 1972 Gibson System SG amp, 100 watts from a tube power section and solid state preamp. It had a cool old-school phase shifter built in that sounded killer.
HeXx on steel, Bad Brad Stivers on guitar, Bruce Collins on drums, Mac McMurray on bass.

Here is one way to win a "CHC" cutting head contest...There are others- BB King utilizes the one note technique to drop the guillotine...

My point, in case you missed it, is that it is the nature of anonymous online forums to occasionally feature debate. There ain't no way around it. This forum like many others has certain rules for the decorum of it's members. I don't think anybody has come close to violating those rules in this thread. Do you?
From Adam's Forum Creed- "Vigorous, passionate conversation is fine. But please refrain from flaming, insulting, or otherwise impugning the intelligence or good intentions of your fellow board members, or from starting threads that seek to encourage that sort of behavior."
