As a previous guitarist I'm a huge fan of Dr. Z amps....they are the best guitar amp made as far as I'm concerned...nothing fancy...just tone tone tone. All tubes...and small speakers...they are small amps made to drive and mic...

Anyone use them for harp?

I played through a couple at a Dr. Z dealer's shop one time. There were two in particular that really caught my ear. One was an EZG-50 2X10 combo. It kinda put me in mind of a blackface Super Reverb. The other one was an SRZ-65 head through a 4X10 cab. To me, it sounded like a Bassman on steroids. I probably would've liked it a bit more if it was maybe through a 2X10 or 2X12. 60W through four 10's is a little excessive for my taste. Some preamp tube swaps might've also been in order.

Thing about Dr. Z amps is that most of their amps are EL84 powered, and while I happen to like a lot of EL84 amps, EL84 tone is an acquired taste among harp players. Everyone has their own preference between noval and octal power tubes, and even between tetrodes and pentodes. Some say tubes like EL84's and 7868's are too chimey and bright, and that tubes of the 6*6, EL34, and KT variety are much warmer. This might be why Dr. Z's aren't found in the use of many harp players.

Ahh...interesting...I hadn't thought of that...what makes them stellar guitar amps actually doesn't make for a great harp amp!

Truth be told, if it weren't a two thousand dollar amp, I might really be interested in that EZG-50.

I've tried blowing harp through a few new boutique guitar amps and did not really like the tone in any of them. But ya get curious, ya know? When a guitar player brings something exotic to the jam I'll often ask to try it. I've tried Two Rock, Carr, Cat5, Bludotone, and others. Some sound better than others but none sound like a good custom harp amp.

@Rick

Have you ever gotten a chance to play through any Victorias?
