Hi guys! I'm working on my third position playing and wonder if anyone would like to contribute to a list of nice blues songs (minor or not) that one ought to do song studies on?

If anyone have leads to nice backing tracks for third pos stuff that would be nice to (yes I'm aware that you can play third position to any song but I'm looking for those defining songs/licks of third)

Thanks a lot!

Ps. Oh, and keys are always nice if you have them otherwise I can probably find it after awhile...

Sonny Boy II -- "I Don't Know"
Sonny Boy II –“The Hunt”
Little Walter backing Muddy -- "I just Want to make Love to You."
Jimmy Cotton -- "Little Red Riding Hood"
Musselwhite – “Christo”
Paul DeLay – “Ocean of Tears”
William Clarke – “Blowin’ the Family Jewels”
Kim Wilson – “You Put the Hurt on Me”
Various - “Telephone Blues”
Mark Hummel – “Out on a Limb”
Little Walter – “Off the Wall”
Musselwhite – “Rough Dried Woman”
Junior Wells – “Hoodoo Man Blues” the whole disc is mostly 3rd

These will keep you going in the 3rd mindset long enough to hold your interest as well as build your muscle memory.

Telephone Blues - George Smith - B - A harp in third
Telephone Blues - Kim Wilson - Bb - Ab harp in third
Tribute to George Smith - Rod Piazza - Bb - Ab harp in third, first part of Rod's solo (at least on the Harpburn album) is a Bb harp played in first position.

Off the Wall is in second not third.

Check out music by Mark Hummel, Charlie Musselwhite, Rod Piazza , Kim Wilson and WIlliam Clarke. They all play a fair bit of third position stuff.

This is a very nice track to learn in third. Originally by Jimmy Reed, Kim Wilson gives it the T-birds flavouring here.

Nuthin' gets past this crowd. You are correct. Off the Wall is indeed in Second. I was going from memory. I was thinking Crazy Mixed Up World. But, disregard that also, it's on a thing with a button.

Yeah the intro is on an Ab in third, then solo starts on a Bb in 1st.

Coincidentally that album was the first one I ever bought on CD. Before that it was all cassette tapes and vinyl. I bought it because I'd heard Rockin' Robin on the radio and wanted to learn it. I thought to myself nothing on the album could possibly be better than that track. Man was I wrong!!! That was my first exposure to Rod's music. After that I got every recording by Rod I could get my hands on. To this day though Harpburn and California Blues are my favourite Rod Piazza albums of all time. I just love his tone, harp playing and song choices on both of those albums

the solo is in third until the 5.52 mark
where he switches to straight harp
this is one of my favorite songs by the mighty flyers
i just wish he would do a simpler "tribute"

"i'd like to dedicate this next song to my friend george smith i miss him"

to me it detracts from the song.
i dont need to here the spiel each and every time
once was enough.

george smith sang it like he meant it
cause i think he did
"i tried to call my baby"
another man answered the phone ouch!
that is some serious blues right there.

i remember dating this girl a couple of times
i called, and her mom answered... told me not to call her daughter any more... pretty devastating.. ouch!

"george smith sang it like he meant it

Just checked out Georges' version and he definately meant it! It has that edge of desperation sound.

"I said PLeeeeaassse,,,,,,, PLeasse Baby tell me whats goin on wrong"

I could well be wrong. It's been a very long time since I've listened to it. I don't own an Ab harp these days to test it out either. I always seem to remember that the solo started in first on a Bb harp on blow 1.

it's not about being right or wrong
its about sharing things with friends
you never knew you had
we have both listened to that album a million times
there is always new things to discover
just when you think you have it all suss out
you can hear just one tiny inflection that changes everything.

qoute... "To this day though Harpburn and California Blues are my favourite Rod Piazza albums of all time"

harpburn and calif. blues our my favorite albums by anybody top ten, desert island... top tier S%$#

Very true indeed. Listening to Harpburn was what made me want to play amplified harp in the band. Before that I was just playing direct into a vocal mic.

Actually only about a 1/3 of Hoodoo man Blues is played in third. But they are worth woodshedding.

5. In the Wee Hours – Dm, 1st solo = Chromatic , 2nd solo = Chromatic , 3rd solo = G Harp (2nd Position)
6. Hey Lawdy Mama – A, D Harp (2nd Position)
7. Hoodoo Man Blues – A, D Harp (2nd Position)
8. Early in the Morning – A, D Harp (2nd Position)
9. We're Ready – Am, G Harp (3rd Position)
10. You Don't Love Me, Baby – A, D Harp (2nd Position)
11. Chitlin con Carne – Am, G Harp (3rd Position)

I quite like Hollywood Fats Band - Little Girl. Al Blake's third position is a bit simpler and sporadic compared to telephone blues - in this case, less is more. The instrumental "Solidor" from Giles Robson and the Dirty Aces Crooked Heart of Mine is another one worth listening to.

Katten,

Jag länkade för en tid sedan till Paul Jones och The Blues Band "Meet me in the bottom". Där har du ett riktigt rejält bra tredjepositionssolo. (B dur.)

@bluemoose, thanks for posting the keys for Hoodoo Man Blues. I've jammed along with it and noticed that a G harp goes a long way. You could use a G on every track, in 3rd (and 5th for the first song, which is quite doable too). It makes a nice contrast to Junior's D harp.

@sorin, welcome back. You are awesome.
