Recent posts concerning crunch got me looking at two short Greg H. videos where he documents the effectiveness of making use of the right thumb for a good seal. It looks to me like Greg is using the end cap right hand grip advocated by David Barrett where his right index finger encases the right end of the harp. Today I was watching the Moon Cat SM57 video and noticed he's very effectively using a grip that's more baseball style than end capping. My impression is the second grip is a bit more generic and possibly better suited as a grip good for both amplified and acoustic playing.

The grip that Greg uses is indeed the grip advocated by David Barrett. That grip ensures that the harp is fully blocked off and the cup makes a very good seal indeed. The best example of a fully sealed cup is probably Dennis Gruenling or Andy Just. Rick Davis refers to this grip as "cheek blocking".

The grip that Jason is using is what people refer to as the standard grip. As it's the most widely utilised grip. It's very easy to get a good cup and seal on the mic using this grip if you know what you're doing. However a lot of people simply don't pay attention to things and end up with no seal on the mic as their cup is not correct. They simply see someone holding their hands in that fashion and try to copy it unaware of what they are really doing or what they should be listening for.

My advice would be to learn both methods, then you can chop and change as you wish during the course of a song. This will give you better dynamics and therefore more tonal colours to play with. Whether you're playing acoustic or electric. Which of course is a very, very good thing.

I definitely learned that from David Barrett. Who learned it from Gary Smith. I believe people's facial shape and hands are different. You should use whatever works. The key is KNOWING what "WORKING" is.

And THAT is a full seal between rear of harp and mic, AND a full seal between front of harp and face. If done perfectly - no sound can come out because there is nowhere for the air to go. But it is so hard to do THAT well that most people never come close.

If you really wanna learn, try putting a piece of tape over holes 1 and 2, holes 5-10. Now JUST play holes 3 and 4. You KNOW no sound is leaking out the front. If you can't mute the sound with your cup (acoustic or with mic) your cup is leaking in the rear. Now take that tape off. Put a piece of tape over the entire rear of the harp. You know no sound is leaking out the back. If you can't mute the sound with your cup (acoustic or with mic) your cup is leaking in the front.

We don't play with our cup so tight as to cut off the notes, but damn close WHEN WE WANT. You can ALWAYS open your cup. The key is knowing whether you're even close. Note this is just as valid for acoustic play, and results in a MUCH more effective "WAH".

I keep meaning to make a cup video. It's one of the couple things I do really well. On an airtight harp I can get the 8-10 draws to sound on a 1 blow if I want to. I've also got a low friction way to do warbles. Sometimes everything else seems like a mystery, but those two things I've got down.

edit- you know Greg, I know you are always complaining about the Captchas, I don't know how to do it, but I've filled in so many of these captchas that they are recycling and autofill takes over on most of them. If I could just export that data... eh, I'd probably end up including all my bank information. Maybe that's not such a good idea. :)
