Just been on the Hohner C-Shop to look at reed wrenches. They cost €4.45 which is about £4 or $5. The shipping charge alone from Germany to the UK is €13.75. That's approximately £12 or $18!!! Thanks but no thanks Hohner. I'm not bloody well paying three times the price of the product just to ship it within the EU.

They are like one of those eBay dealers, or amazon. Great prices, unaffordable postage. Except the prices are reasonable rather than artificially low, but the postage is wild. P&H I suppose, so it's the H which is probably a tad high.

Hahaha! Yes just a little bit. I've sent Arzajac an email and I'll get one of his handmade ones instead. It'll probably be better made than the Hohner one anyway.

I want one of Andrew's also. I bought some reeds from hohner last week, $25 to ship me 20 reeds. 4 little packs which probably weigh 100g including packaging

That's just crazy money for what's involved. I can't why it's so difficult and expensive for someone to just put something so small into an envelope and post it first class like a normal person would with a letter. It shouldn't cost more than a couple of Euros/ Pounds/ Dollars.

Yeah, I had to pay £13.00 'customs charge' for a volume control for my SM57

But hey, remember the Germans are supporting the Euro!

These new marine bands suck too!! has anyone had the same problem. I think they took the coating off the wood. All the new ones are dry and hard to play. As if the harp industry isn't hard enough already they wanna charge $40 and then make them play like crap. I have almost had to go to special 20's exclusively unless I can get some of the older model marine bands at least the ones they are not makin now. Come on Hohner shape up

Bigtone - Really? I've found the new 1896 Marine Bands to be some of the best out of the box harps I've ever played. Maybe you got a duff one. All the new ones I've played have been airtight, loud and super responsive. I haven't even needed to gap them.

Nick - Oh don't get me started on the "customs charge" thing. It really aggravates me. Bloody rip off Government we have in this country.

Contact Sutherland Trading or Tony Dannecker. Both get regular shipments from Hohner and may be able to help.

Yeah Fred I know...don't worry about it. I'll have to get a supply of busted ones organised but I'll try to pick em up locally.

You can make one from a spark plug feeler guage or thin hack saw blade

Best you get a wrench from Andrew.

i make my own wrenches as the Hohner wrench tends to bend at the jaws. once that happens it starts to slip. i think it is made of phosphor bronze and therefore pliable.

it is a tad loose too. stainless steel is much better.
i have one reed wrench for modern Hohners and another i made for pre-war models. the seats on pre-wars are wider than modern Hohners. i like my wrenches to fit so snug that play is minimal to the point of being virtually unnoticeable.
i must say that the Hohner wrench is an excellent reed shaper at the handle end. i copied it's design.

The best reed wrench for Hohner harps I ever had (and still use to this day came from a reed removal kit that I bought from an old time chromatic player and tool and die maker named Dave Doucette, and that hit was known as the 3RT, which the late Bill Romel took over making after Dave passed away.

Kingley,

Reed wrenches are dead easy to make. Find a suitable bit of metal, old reed plate etc. Measure the head of the reed
and find a drill bit a little under that size. Drill the end of the bit of metal as close to the edge as possible and use a file to finish. I have made several in different sizes this way and they work fine.

Chris Reynolds made one for me I use at Suzuki.
Joe Spiers sent me one I use at home--different sizes at each end.
You can make one from old reed plates if you don't mind redoing it all the time LOL
