Hi all,
I am a singer/songwriter that came up as a bass player and learned a bunch of other instruments along the way. Unfortunately, the harp was not one of them! So I’ve chosen to darken your virtual door with an original song that’s in desperate need of a harp solo. This is the first song I’ve written specifically with a harp solo in mind so I’m kind of intrigued by the idea. It also has a guitar solo immediately after the harp solo but…… whaddya gonna do! Those guys are really hard to elbow out of the picture! …………. But I digress…
Anyhoo, I thought I’d check in, introduce myself and see if anyone would like to take a crack at a twelve bar solo. Here’s the link to a downloadable copy of the song. (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=849553&songID=12357730) The mix is far from complete but it has all the major bits in it so you can get the feel for how you might work it.
The solo should start right around the 1:08 mark and finish up around the 1:30 mark. The outro solo should start right around the 3:10 mark and go to the end. Just send me a Wav file of your isolated solos (or link to a downloadable file) at "loudgasandelectric@gmail.com" and I can take it from there.
I welcome anyone to take a heartfelt whack at it but I reserve the right to use the one (with full attribution) that sounds the best to my ear. There is no immediate plan to publish at this time but it may end up on the next Loud Gas and Electric CD, for whatever that’s worth, if it makes the cut (see loudgasandelectric.com and associated links).
If there’s a manageable number of solos sent my way I’ll mix up a custom copy for each person and send a full-up AIFF file via Mediafire for your listening enjoyment.
I hope to hear from some of you.
All the best!

That's a great sounding track Skip, I'm sure you'll get a lot of interest in what you are doing.
I'd have a go myself if I could work out the key? :)

Ok. Didn't really think about the key of the song (bass-players don't think in keys). So here's the chord progression by section:
Intro/verses/lead break/outro B/D x4 E/D x 2 A/D B/D x 2 F# D/A
Chorus E/D/A x 2 B/D/A x2 E/D/A x 2 F# D/A
Middle 8 G/A x 3 B G/A x 3 B
I hope this helps.

seems to be in B i did it with a chrome. i dont have an E diatonic i blew it out. i dont have a studio either. seems fun reminds me of my old metal band. its in B but then im always wrong. i was playing in B i think. for a 30 sec raveup like that youd want sloppy yardbirds crazy diatonic crossed harp. the 30 sec outro you may want chrome in 3rd so its not as shrill maybe even jazz leaning at the very end. im out i would like to though.

I was playing around with it a bit last night on my E, but I wasn't happy with how I was sounding (it was late and I couldn't really let it wail without waking my neighbors and today was yard work day at my mom's. I just got home and it's too late to take another shot tonight. I'll give it another go tomorrow.
I agree with fred gomez, a wailing sound thing- I was starting and finishing on a bent wail for the first part- didn't even get to the second part. I actually had been planning to post a song on here and see if I could get a couple guys to cut heads on competing solos. It's a reimagining of the Devil Went Down to Georgia but with a twist and harps, but my band has never got a tight track recording down.

I confess that much of what you guys are talking about is over my head.....because I don't speak Harp! ;)
The only thing I hear in my head is a big bend up at the start of the solo. Beyond that I defer to you guys to figure out what you believe fits the song.
Really interested in what you guys come up with!

Have you considered looking for a good harp player in your area and hiring them to come in and record on this track? ----------

Doug,
Songwriting and recording is a hobby (really therapy) for me so hiring a local pro is not something I considered.
I usually use guitar solos exclusively and was just trying something different. My hope was that the results would be mutually beneficial.
Mission,
I will contact hakan and see if he's interested.
Thanks guys for the input/feedback/etc... I sincerely appreciate it!

Mission,
RIght on both counts! ;) Of course that youtubes link is blocked here at work but I'll check it out tonight. Is it a chimp channeling Little Walter?

Here's my 5 minute listen through. It's a B minor tune, not major. Grab an A and play 3rd position. It was easy. or grab a G and play 5th or grab a D and play 4th
If it wasn't past my working man's bedtime, I'd take a swing at recording a track myself. Maybe tomorrow.

Don´t know if you still need more to chose from? If so I can take a stab at it, since I´m right now trying to get a grip on Audacity for recording on another track and that could be good practice. But I see you have to be a "member" of Soundclick in order to download the song -- trouble.
If you´re interested and can send me the song -- and accept an mp3-file, I´ll give it a go (if I can handle the technicalities!).
Don´t worry, I can play.

Ok.
First off ..
Greg, Thanks for being a positive motivating force! It is greatly appreciated!
Second...
I have received files from two players so far and each have a unique take on the solo/outro ....which is what this exercise is all about. I really like what I've heard so far! Thanks guys!
Third,
I will be out of the country through Monday so if I don't respond to those whom have provided files or will, in the interim, provide files don't feel slighted; I'm just paying the bills.
The end game is to provide each contributor with a mixed and mastered song in CD playable format and, if I can figure it out, a final post, in this thread, with links to all versions that I'll post on Soundclick.
This is starting to get interesting!

Just checking in after they decided to let me back in the country!
I've got files from two forum members and just received guitar files from lead guy. There's still time if anyone else wants to give it a shot!
I'll be working on both versions over the next few days and should have something to post up soon.

Thanks everyone for your hospitality and tolerance of a non-harp player! I appreciate all your comments and the contributions of three of your fellow forumites, i.e. Shane, Linus, and Martin.
Shane, Linus and Martin each brought their A-game and their own interpretation to the table on this one. Guys! I appreciate the time you spent on this and the creativity you brought to this song. My collaborator and I went back and forth, for several days, on which one to choose for use on the prospective CD and, after much discussion and gnashing of teeth, we have decided to use Martin’s solo.
Thanks again to each of you for taking the time to provide your best and for being stand-up guys!

I liked them all, but I was really waiting for a giant wail right on the beat after 'Gabriel blow that thing'. It's always funny to hear how other people approach the same problem. I tried a couple tries at playthroughs myself, but I couldn't get the sound in my head out of my head.

Thanks guys, this was quite fun. Not the usual type of stuff I play.
And I´ve already apologized to Skip for some sloppiness, esp on the 4 pos outro. I should have re-recorded that. But I was using that #!% shitty Audacity and I couldn´t hear myself playing -- the effing program refused to load the song while also opening up a solo track, so I just had to send a "naked" solo track!! -- and that´s a bit tough.
Skip has done a very impressive job fitting the solo to the song.
@nacoran: I see exactly what you mean, and yes, that giant wail would have been nice and appropriate. Don´t know why it didn´t strike me ...

Great tune and well done to everyone who contributed - all did a better job than I could.
Although, nacoran, I too feel like there's something missing... how much do we need to club together to hire the moon cat for 12 bars??
