I bought a new mic and it was advertised as a JT-30 but on closer inspection it's a JT-40. What's the story on the JT-40 and how is it different than a JT-30? What years were they made? It's a beautiful mic with a CR element and volume control added and sounds great and I'm completely happy with my purchase, I was just hoping to find out more about it. Thanks

I have a jt-40 and I have the original ad from the 1940's for astatic mics. It has the jt-30 and jt-40 and the only difference is the jt-30 says for recording and instrument use and the jt-40 says for vocal range. I do not know if the elements were different but there is some difference i'd think if they advertised as such. The model 40 is obviously more rare. Good buy on that mic. I love all the different versions of the jt-30's.

Thanks Bigtone, It's hard to find much information on them but Goldbug has a listing on one and he said they were made in the late 40's early 50's. Another person said it was more pointed than a JT-30, but not sure that's true because I don't have one to compare. I thought I was buying a fixer upper and it's one of the best mic' I own.

There are a lot of versions of the Astatic JT-30. The JT-30-C (ceramic), JT-40, etc. etc.

One of my favs is from Astatic Labs. Can't remember its number. The screws for the grille are long chromed things that look like tail pipes on a hotrod. One of the coolest JTs i've ever seen. it was a repair and i couldn't talk the owner into a sell/swap deal.
oh well....

very cool! :-)

Chromatic repair guy Mike Fathead Easton showed me a rocket ship shaped Astatic that i think is a 200 series. useless for harp. v. cool if you like to
sit around looking at stuff. but the hot rod is a players mic.

Yeah I have a Astatic 600 rocket mic. It is the coolest mic in the world but not easy to use due to the plastic grill. JT-30 is the most simple and best design in my opinion. My fav is the olive drab green with the black LAB tag. Sexy!!

The original JT40 was essentially the same as a JT30, but most of them had the cable hard wired into the element in all the ones I've seen.

The elements seen are as follows:

MC-151 -- crystal element with a midrange presence rise
MC-101 -- crystal element WITHOUT a midrange presence rise.
MC-127 -- ceramic element with a midrange presence rise
MC-126 -- ceramic element WITHOUT a midrange presence rise.

@ Bigtone-

oh right, Astatic 600. yeah, that plastic/bakelite nose of the rocket totally gets in the way. i forgot if the fins were plastic/bakelite too. i remember the connection was similar to the Astatic T-3. Another very cool offering from Astatic now that i think of it.
Anyway, Easton was doing sound at a jam and asked me if i wanted to play it. (apparently the cystal still worked!) i was like Hell Yes! but he couldn't find it's cable in his gear box. oh well.
