Hi all,

I have a question regarding the Epiphone Valve Jr. head and cabinet combo. The head is rated at 5W and the cabinet is rated at 75W, so about how loud is the setup together?

I currently am using a Kay 703 with a line out to the PA as my gigging amp, but I'm looking for something that can be louder on it's own. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

5 Watts is 5 watts. Just because a speaker is rated a higher wattage doesn't mean the output will be more powerful. The 12" speaker in the EVJ cabinet will project better and have more low end response to it than the 8" found in the EVJ combo though.

If I were you, I'd continue using the Kay over the EVJ for gigging. Damn good old amps for harp. The EVJ is okay in its stock form, but to get better harp tone from it, it'll need some tweaks for it to come close to touching the 703.

Thanks for your response. That's what I thought, but I wasn't positive. There's no way to modify my 703 to power a larger cabinet, correct?

Those 703 amps can be tricky I think. I hope it's been modernised enough to be safe.

Tmannion, the Epi Valve Jr will not be much louder than the Kay 703, if at all. But having the line out, I think the Kay would be a pretty good gigging amp. I know it can be hard to hear yourself with such a rig but if you are careful you can run it through the monitors (as well as mains) on the PA and sound huge. Feedback through the monitors can be a bitch.

If you like the tone of the Kay I think you should find a way to make it work. The Kay has a rather primitive circuit that gives it a really vintage tone. Have you thought of trying an anti-feedback device such as the Kinder pedal? Consider the Kay to be just a tone generator or pedal and use the PA as the amp. The Kinder pedal will help tame the feedback though the monitors if it becomes an issue.

I have done this with my 6-watt 1964 Marvel tube amp and it sounded great. I didn't need the Kinder pedal. It was fun to cut through a loud jam with a tiny amp, and the tone was awesome.
