One of the groups I play in is a duo consisting of guitar, vocals, harp, and we increasingly find ourselves playing completely unplugged gigs, where we do the strolling mariachi act, traveling around the venue, serenading the tables, etc. Our music is soft and jazzy, so this works pretty well.

I often need to have immediate access to various harps, so leaving my harp case back at our staging point is becoming less practical, and pockets just don't cut it. Fumbling in a shoulder bag to grab the right instrument is certainly less than elegant, so I now have to consider apparel like the harp belt /pouch...an approach that never really appealed to me, or was necessary in the past.

Have any of you ever used the $20.00 Hohner(6 harps) or the $40.00 Seydel(8 harps) belt or the $20.00 & $25.00 Seydel belt pouches (6 or 12 harp sizes)?

At the moment, I need six diatonics and my chromatic(4-octave size, needs a separate solution) to perform the gig, but this could increase over time.

I'm considering the Seydel belt or the 12 harp pouch, but just thought I'd check in here first to see who has experience with any of these things.

Thanks in advance.

Hi robbert!

I have, and use, the Seydel bag for 12 harps. Is great, it is very small so I can put all my harps (but, I dont have 12 harps), my mic and a cable in my backpack and I am ready to the jam.

It is a great Item.

@Rogonzab...I appreciate your input.

I'm leaning toward that beltpack over other options, at the moment.

It looks professional, is relatively inexpensive, and I tested 12 harps in a mockup beltpack, and it did not seem at all heavy.

It looks like access is nimble enough, so I'm thinking it will answer my needs for this situation.

I like this option. Getting my wife to make me one similar to it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tresider/2134273263/

I use the Seydel 8-harp belt. I used to use the Hohner 6-harp belt, but I can tell you now that the Seydel one is much better constructed. It uses nylon straps to hold the harps in, as opposed to the elastic the Hohner one uses, which become frayed over time. I hold 8 diatonics in mine on my right hip, and then I also have a digital camera pouch with a belt loop I put on the belt's strap on my left hip to hold an additional three diatonics. I don't use a chromatic, but one viable solution I've come up with for that is an eyeglass pouch with a belt clip. Something like this...

It's wide enough to hold just about any chromatic, 12-hole or 14-hole diatonic, or tremolo harp. But they're also snug enough to hold said harp securely.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions.

@PaulB...I like the idea of the vest, but right now I need something ready-to-go.

@Hawk...I'll check out the glasses case for the 4 octave chrome, or maybe just a regular fanny pack.

The wandering minstrel approach, w/o any amplified support is quite a lot of fun, and very theatrical, as well. I enjoy playing acoustically, and actually have to be careful not to be too loud for the guitar and vocals. The harp can cut through.

We're not entirely audible to a roomful of chattering diners, but we create a lot of atmosphere, anyway, and sometimes the room will even fall silent for a moment as something we're playing catches the attention.

Interesting experiment...
