If you want to play guitar.. PLAY guitar! If you want to play bass DON'T play guitar. just my humble opinion.

I think his point is there was only 1 Jaco.

Otherwise " lead bass' ain't helping the groove

I can't say I've ever had a raging desire to play bass. Don't get me wrong....Jaco was a bad mf'er. I love the work he did with Toots Thielemans...

...but still, I've never had the itch to learn. I'll leave playing bass to my wife. She has a T-Bird IV that she's learning on.

Which reminds me...does anyone have a recommendation for a bargain priced bass amp that would be good for her to practice with? I'm talking like 20 or 30 watts. Can be a combo or a head since I have a bass amp cab. I have my Alamo Fury bass amp that she could work with, but after I get done tweaking it for harp, it won't be as good for bass anymore.

yeah, if Little Walter wanted to play saxophone, he should have played saxophone, not harp.

Anyone who truly wants to understand and play music can only benefit from playing multiple instruments, even on a basic level so as to understand how they interact rhythmically, melodically, and sonically in the mix.

This thread grabbed me because I've been digging into the rhythm section myself recently and just last week got this book:
Bass Grooves: Develop Your Groove and Play Like the Pros in Any Style Book/CD

It's pretty good so far! Ed seems like great educator in addition to stellar bassman.

playing bass is a good skill to have. it can get you work, guitarists are a dime a dozen. before backing tracks i recorded bass lines then overdubbed a snare drum and tambourine. then id practice harp over that. i learned to play 12 and 16 bar blues in every key. taught myself to play blues one handed in D and A while smoking, drinking a beer or playing harp with my left. im not a phenominon but i can finish out a 1st set waiting for the real bass player who will be a half hour late. or i can take over on bass or drums for a member who is too puking sick to finish. carey bell played bass. good to have something to fall back on.

@ Garry this got a little wrong. The thing that didn't got thru is that people can play what the F they want but if you are going to play BLUES with a bassguitar you'd be better off doing bass lines. You would't even know who little walter was if he were playing harp like a diddgeridoo that's for sure!

Way back in 1992 I had buddies that put a blues band together; keyboard rhythem gutar and harp. They talked about adding a Bass player so I went to the pawn shop, but some equipment and have not stopped. Funny thing is I became a Little Walter fan as I learned to play blues on bass.
The point on the video above is taken about staying on beat while playing bass. That is not to say you can never syncopate; same goes for drummers.
