Hi I'm hoping someone can help. I'm trying to learn 10,000 reasons by Matt Redman it's a church tune and not a blues.

My question is that the song is in the key of G so obviously I could pick up a G harp and play but the range of the song is from an E up a whole octave to the next F# and I can't hit my blow bend on the ten whole, so if I use the lower octave with the lowest note being the E on the 3 hole bend am I now playing in 2 position key of D, or am I still in G?

Also could I play in second position using a C harp using the 2 hole blow as my lowest note being E up to the F on the 5 draw. Or is the lack of an f# going to stop that working?

Be aware I can't overblow and I need to try and learn it by Sunday. Your help and advice is as always appreciated.

Cheers
Greg.

"...so if I use the lower octave with the lowest note being the E on the 3 hole bend am I now playing in 2 position key of D, or am I still in G?"

You're still in G. This approach may work depending how accurate and musical you can make 3 hole bend. If you're trying for a gentle/sweet feel it might be best to use a Paddy harp where the 3 blow is tuned up to that 'missing' note. If your bends are stable a G harp might work fine.

"...could I play in second position using a C harp using the 2 hole blow as my lowest note being E up to the F on the 5 draw. Or is the lack of an f# going to stop that working?"

If you can't overblow I'd avoid the C harp. I know the tune but don't have a harp in hand at the moment. I'm not sure how prominent that F# is. I guess you could skip that note altogether (or buy a country tuned C harp).

No, you still in G (1st position) regardless of the octave you're in.

You can't substitute an F natural for an F#; it'll just sound like a bad note. You could go down to D instead of up to F# there -- it still fits the chord -- but you'd be missing a very dramatic note if you did that.

If you can hit that 3-draw bend in tune 1st position on a G is probably your best bet.

Just taken a quick look and here is my take on the melody. A harp in C works well in 2nd position if you don’t mind hitting the 2 step bend on 3. There is one OB but I have shown a possible alternative for that (a kind of harmony).

I’ve stayed on the lower octave for the verse because it looks like there’s an OB playing it in the middle octave.

You will see I’ve chosen +3 or -2 for certain notes so choose your preference here.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
-3-4+5+5-4-3

O my soul,
-3**/-3/-3**-2, +2

Worship His holy name.
+2-2-4-3+3-3**

Sing like never before,
-3-4+5+5-4-3

0 my soul.
+5+5ob-3 (Possible no OB alternative = +5-6-3 or+6-6-3)

I'll worship Your holy name.
-2-2-3**-3-3**+3+3

The sun comes up, it's a new day dawn
-1-2-2-2, -1-1-2*-2-2

It's time to sing Your song again.
-2-2-2-2-2 -3**-3-3

Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me,
-+3+4+4+4-3 -3**-2-3**-2-3**-3-3**-2+2

Let me be singing when the even- ing comes.
-2-2-2-2-2-2 -3**-3-3**-2

Hey guys, thanks for all the wisdom, I'm just back from work so I'm going to sit down and get some practice in. I spent a while trying to tab it out from the sheet music, which was when I started figering out some of the problems I was going to have, so I really appreciate you input, it clears things up for me a lot. I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers
Greg.

Just an update to once again say thanks for the advice. I actually picked up a lee Oskar melody maker in G which worked a treat, just had to amend the tabs a little and all was well. I've got say using the melody maker felt a little like cheating but it worked so can't complain.

I was learning the song for a try outs jam for a local church band, I managed to improvise and riff around on the melodies of the other tunes that I had not had the chance to practice, but I must have done ok 'cos they asked me back for their next session. So once again thanks.

Cheers
Greg.
