Argh!!! I dropped my JT30 from ebay before I even played it! Looks like I broke a crystal element! Suggestions for reasonably priced obtainable element to acquire? I'm just a basement hack and don't need top end (highest prced).

A good 99A86 or 99B86 element would best of the cm's. Like Kingley says "Built like tanks!" They sound really good.

@BAG, I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I would also recommend a Shure CM as a replacement. It's not nearly as much of a gamble as a crystal (in terms of what you're likely to get when you purchase sight unseen). As Kingley and Ray note, they are also virtually indestructible (a nice plus!) You will need a new gasket, though.

Also considering dropping a Shure element into a JT30 shell. Is the required gasket a Shure gasket, a JT30 gasket, or one modified to fit the Shure/Astatic hybrid? Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for responses so quickly. Do I have to go to ebay to get a Shure CM element or are there other sources?

If the crystal tone is what you want in your mic, you might also consider an MC-564-1 ceramic element. They're basically man-made crystals, but they're a lot more durable than a true crystal.

For a crystal mic, all it takes is the slightest drop and sometimes nothing at all..Too fleeting even though they sound great. GO with the Shure CM elements. Even though they are built like tanks and can withstand moderate drops, a good drop can cause the armature to get out of alignment and this will cause element to sound weak. However, there are guys out there who can fix that type of thing. So is the end, it is fixable unlike a crystal.
