I just gave my first Skype lesson.
It lasted 15 minutes. It was to show how to start in 3rd position. I had emailed a document in advance so he was prepared on what I was going to say. I also sent a backing track, if needed. All went smooth enough.
If I had any complaints, it would be more towards my ability to speak and teach than the use of Skype. Using Skype was not a real problem. The only thing I knew we could not do, was play at the same time. Nor could I supply live music for him to play against.
Over all, I would not hesitate to do it again.

Skype lessons rock. Less driving & greater options for teachers/students. Sometimes I forget the teacher isn't really in the room with me. There's solutions for students to have music to play against.

As eharp said, your student was quite happy with your lesson. He will probably want more from you. ---------- Wisdom does not always come with old age. Sometimes old age arrives alone.

My only experience with Skype was when we tried to have forum chats. My computer and connection weren't up to the task of hosting half a dozen+ members. It kept freezing. It was no fun. Of course, it was the number of people that was the problem. I wonder whether it's gotten better.
I've used Google Voice a few times, but only for single calls. You can actually route those through your home phone (without video). I wonder if it has conference abilities.

I've done Skype a few times. Some problems with sound. Echo and dropouts. These days we use google plus. That's ok but I can't record the vision. It actually is possible, if I made it a public broadcast it would automatically record on YouTube, but my teacher doesn't want to do that. With Skype I could record the call no problem. Google plus has some other advantages, like letting you see documents, and I record the voice on my phone voice recorder. Works ok. ----------
