Maybe I've got an HG (1 or 2, I dunno if there's a diff) cab with no amp. And I have a Epi Vj in a chassis looking for a cab. Is it feasible to marry these up? I dont have the cab here but it's set up for upward facing control panel, and th Epi is designed to be forward facing. Best way to approach it? Or best forget it do you think?

I'd be more tempted to build a 5F1 amp and put it in the HG cab. That way you'll have a killer tweed champ or with a few mods a HG1, which is one of my all time favourite harp amps. Best bet would be to speak to Mark Burness (5F6H), but I suspect you could utilise many of the Epiphone components to make a 5F1. Then you'd just need a chassis and other bits that could easily be either fabricated or obtained from eBay.

I agree with Kingley on this. You could get a chassis that fits the HG for around $60 and probably use most of the parts from the Epi . You would end up with an EL84 amp. By going with the 5F1 or 5F2 build, (My choice) you would end up with an awesome tweed clone. I built a nice cab from birch plywood for an epi that I reworked. Then you would have 2 amps.

I'd restore the Harp Gear and do something else with the Epiphone. Putting the Valve Junior guts in the Harp Gear cabinet is a bit like dropping a VW engine into your Porche: you could probably make it work, but what would you have when you're done?

I'd get in touch with Brian Purdy for advise. Maybe it wouldn't be that expense for him to ship you a new HG chassis.

Thanks for your thoughts. At this stage I dont want to drop any dough on acquiring more 5w amps. I'll probably just use it as a speaker cab for one of the Epi amps, if the sig 8 sounds alright.

@MJ: Oooh! That looks purty! I've got my VJ head, and no cab for it at the moment. I've always wished I had bought the combo version anyway... Maybe I'll have to do this... Do you have any kind of plans for the build laying around? Is that baltic birch plywood, or just generic birch? Did you go for 1/2" or 3/4"? Looks like you went with simple butt joints (very sensible!). Did you use glue blocks inside in addition to the screws? What speaker did you go with? Anything you might have done different in hindsight? Okay, okay! Last question, I promise! :)

@isaculla. I have no drawn plans for the cab. If you wish I will send you the dimensions. The cab is slightly trapezoidal in shape, so the speaker tilts upward. I used "5/8 birch plywood that I bought at Orchard Supply Hardware. I did not use glue blocks, The speaker baffle and rear upper and lover covers gives plenty of shear to the cab. I have a Weber 8F125 speaker installed. I did change from el84 to 6V6 power tube and I installed a cathode bypass boost switch. I would say that it does what I want it to. Truthfully, I don't use it much as I have others I prefer. It was a lot of fun to build and kept me out of trouble for a bit.

@mj. Thank you for that info, it's very helpful. I really like the way yours turned out, so I think I'm definitely gonna do something similar soon. I have a tendency to get carried away with these kind of projects and way over think them, so your info will help keep me"grounded"! :)

BTW, orchard supply is one of the things I really miss about California! those are such great stores! :)

Nice looking cab, too late now to try the speaker. That can wait until tomorrow.
Ah well, it's not like its gonna go off. It'll keep.
