Hello, I play harmonica for 1 year. And I want to play without my nose. That's the problem: when I lift up my soft palate, notes that i play at 1 2 3 holes become lower and the sound is really bad. What's the problem? Maybe my larynx isn't relaxed?

Bad how? Like a poor bend?

Hi Alexey. What you are experiencing is actually the beginning of a bend (which also explains why the note sounds lower). Try dropping your jaw down really far as you play (creating a larger mouth cavity), this will help address your problem and should also help to improve your general tone as well.

Interestingly, I find that I leave my nose open on many low notes (and low note tongue slaps); I find that it's easier to make things sound fuller and more resonant that way.

I'm sure you'll find that dropping your jaw on these notes will do the trick.

Hi Alexey, Your riff sounds nice! -- and I do hear exactly what you're talking about. As you practice just keep in mind that the real reason people talk about "dropping your jaw" is to get the tongue out of the way... down to the floor of the mouth (particularly focus on getting the back of the tongue down, creating a wide open tunnel from your mouth to your throat -- just like saying ahhhh at the doctor's office). You don't really have to unhinge your jaw :)

Just pay attention to the placement of your tongue as you practice for a while and I'm sure you'll be happy with the results in no time.
