@Quep
Just so you know, if you make a typo, you don't have to correct yourself in a new post. There's an edit link-button on each post you make so you can make corrections or additions. I mean, if you wanna write new corrective posts that's fine. Just thought I'd try to save you the trouble. ----------

@Quep - although I have a pretty good mental picture, I don't have one to look at right now. Someone has worked on the mic because it was NOT the practice at Shure to have 2 different leads connected to the tip - and that may be part of the problem. If you have an ohm meter, you need to translate which wires inside the shell translate to which wires at the 1/4" connector.
You can also simply experiment. You can't hurt the mic or yourself (except, of course, by burning yourself with a soldering iron. ) Leave the cable shield connected to the sleeve of the 1/4" connector and try the other wires, one at a time, connected to the tip. Normally the black wire is the hot one for high impedance. Try that first. Then try the others. Choose the one that's loudest and be on your merry way.
P.S. That resistor is optional - it changes freq. response and reduces the output a very small amount. However IF you use the mic with a volume control, effectively then you're putting 2 resistors in parallel which drops the resistance down below the value of either - and puts excessive load on the element which reduces its output. SO if you're using a volume control I always recommend clipping that resistor. If you're not, its a toss up. The mic may be slightly more feedback resistant with it left in place - but if feedback isn't a problem, you'll drive your amp's preamp tube just a little harder if you clip it out.

Hi Greg, thanks for the great advice...tried what you said. Black to tip...unbelievable. It is loud and responsive now...sounds great. I can't believe I had it wired incorrectly all of this time...and I did burn myself with the soldering iron, but I feel like a man now! I might now be in the market for a volume control...but I'll go to your website for that.
