Is this history making?

I've just started reading "Escaping The Delta". In the first few pages Wald does his best to debunk the myths surrounding Johnson. Most notably to me, he was a virtual unknown in his own time, and only became "famous" after he was dead and marketed with lots of hype, including, of course, the deal with the devil thing, which, according to our own professor Dr. Gussow, doesn't mean at all what it's supposed to mean.
Just curious stuff.

Anyway, I guess scholars will be pleased with the new photo.

Why would it be considered news? Because someone just stumbled across it on the web and didn't check the date, thought it was news. This is going to happen more and more thanks to the internet. Old news is news again if you didn't know about it.

I wonder if RJ really played guitars with no strings or tuning machines. Nice picture, RJ? Probably not. The photo also appears to be reversed if you look at where the ticket pocket is on the white jacket and which side the buttons are on the clothing. But maybe RJ just decided to hold his guitar backwards for the photo. Of course a photo of a black guy with a guitar would have to be someone famous, right?

JD, looking at the other two pictures, it's hard to compare for sure. I don't have a high enough definition picture to see details. Looking at the three, 2 of them look more like the same guy than the third, and the odd one out is not the 'new' one. :)

For a picture a prop guitar is just fine. It looks like a studio shot, not a candid. Ears are kind of like fingerprints supposedly, but the angle is wrong to compare them.

One of the most interesting photo comparisons I've ever seen is the famous Afghan girl from the National Geographic cover.

Green Eyed Girl

You really need high res photos to compare though, although the two pics of the Afghan girl were taken much farther apart chronologically.

They both are very young there. That is probably before he "sold his soul". I am sure that when the photo was taken there was just the POS lying there and Robert grabbed it for the pic. That is not an entirely crazy thought I do not think. I heard Robert was a damn good harp player though before he allegedly became good at guitar out of nowhere. I am sure if they could ask someone who knew Robert they could confirm if it is in fact him.

Yes, I think this picture was definitely taken before he sold his soul. He has that happy "I still own my soul" expression.
