Hello Everyone!

I thought it would be fun to have a place for everyone to be able to post their improvisational harmonica jams and videos. We have a dedicated and diverse community of harmonica players. It's a fun way to see the technique of others and a good way to share.

This is to be a safe place to put personal harmonica videos.

**What to do in this thread.**
  • Post personal harmonica videos

  • Leave positive feedback for others

  • Edit: 03/01/13 -Please leave at least one or two pieces of feedback for other videos, before or after posting your own video.

**What NOT to do in this thread**
  • Make unproductive judgement on others

  • Post any non-personal or non-harmonica related videos

So, in that spirit, please feel free to contribute.

**How to Embed Video**
  • Under the video description, choose SHARE and then EMBED, and just copy and paste that text into your post.

  • When embedding, please make sure you check the video size drop down box below the HTML code. Choose a smaller size if it is larger than 600x400.

I'll get us started off. Enjoy and thank you for participating!

-Random 12 bar blues jam sessions with a couple band mates.-

-Our cover of the song "Lonely Boy" by the Black Keys.-

You don't need a band or anything fancy to post a video. Just to show, here's one of my more novice and my very first harmonica video, as well. Just me and a blues backing track in key of G, playing off of my cell phone.

We used to do something along these lines click here to see our last one. Good luck with it, it's hard work getting this lot to play.

That's a great post, tookatooka. It's too bad the event is over. I'd love to see some members post more videos. It's strange to me that anyone would be so hesitant to share in such a safe setting.

Lets see those videos!!

Hey! Matterhorn, if you have problems with a valve grid pin on an old amplifier, or want to know what magic crystal to use in a prewar mic, or want to argue about lip pursing versus tongue blocking, you'll get tons of responses and replies. But ask someone to actually play harp on a harp forum, you may as well just stick your head up a dead bear's bum. :) :)

Here's a clip from our monthly jam....

We all met through various "open mics" in the Buffalo area....and have evolved into "The Growlers"...now comes the hard part!

PS - I am playing my "Megatone" modified Masco 12EX and 2 x 10 cabinet loaded with an Eminence Legend and Weber Sig10. Danecho DE1 delay, Vintage CM....

Thanks...

LoL. Perhaps, but there's a place for all of that, minus the bear's bum. Hopefully, I can continue to see people post videos from this community. We have some great musicians and I love seeing the diverse techniques and styles everyone has.

@jonlewandowski

Wooo! I love how that all comes together. Growlers is perfect for you guys. All of your roles coalesce so nicely into a deep blues growl. I'd say it was fate that you guys met up. Keep on doing your thing and feel free to post more videos. I really enjoyed your clip!

Cool videos guys. This is a pretty low-fi John Henry sort of noodle: a weird guitar loop for the backing and a phone camera on the floor.

ehh. why not. This was done sometime in April or May....MUCH better a harp-player now, but impressing people I've never met on the internet isn't too important to me. Sharing, however, is always important!

Can't go wrong with the rolling stones... I'm in a classic rock cover band, myself. LOVE when my lead strikes up a stones jam. Really enjoyable when the band gives the extra solo time. Well executed, MJ. Nice work!

@Tuckster

Nice job Tuckster! 2:30 really was your time to shine. Go Steelers! :D

@Aussiesucker

Love that haunting old western feel to your playing. Very cool.

@jodanchudan

Well done! It almost seems like you're stomping with the music or perhaps the camera is just adjusting light. It looks like the floor is moving a bit with the beat. lol. Anyhow, I really like the tune!

@tbang

Sharing is great! Nice playing and great job on vocals as well! Very soulful.

@tbang...that was excellent. Singing really hit me and your playing wasn't too shabby either. In fact, I thought it was tasteful and fit the song well.

Thanks Geordie... I don't know how controlled my playing was in that video from the festival. It was near the end of our set and we were rockin' pretty hard.

The guitar player in that band is now touring internationally with Cassie Taylor's band, Otis Taylor's daughter. So, the band kind a dissolved. The only band I have now is the host band for the Jam we produce. It is ass-kickin', but we are not really gigging together other than the jam. The other 3 guys are in good blues bands; I'm lucky to have them in the host band. I plan on putting together a new working blues band soon. Denver is a great place to find good players (and good clubs to play).

(BTW.. the bass player is headed to Memphis this weekend for the IBC. He will be playing with Dan Treanor's band, Afrosippi.)

I enjoyed listening to the videos on this thread. Cheers for all y'all!

@AUSSIE: Really liked that version of Ghost Riders in the Sky. Nice tone and precision and you have a wonderful , spectral sound in the vibrato.
@Rick Davis: Great tone there, and the trill is splendid. That 6 draw bend sent a chill up my spine.

@Hobostubs Ashlock

That's some dirty southern blues style you've got! Outside of your musical artistry, you're a bit of artist with your filming as well. I think my favorite might be poker on prom night. Great stuff, Ashlock!

@Rick Davis

Nice clip, Rick! You like doing a bit of that chop/stop articulation in your first video as well. I'm sure there's a better name for that rythmic cutting of the harmonica, but whatever it's called... It's good stuff. Great tone and technique in these videos. Keep it up!

@tookatooka

Solos are definitely welcome. That's what I was trying to impress by putting up my old, mistake ridden, solo video in the OP of this thread. You did great! It can be rough getting timing down on some of those intricate transitional pieces in these slow blues tempos. You did really well though. Nice job!

@TheoBurke

Would you believe I've seen this video on Youtube, already? lol. Your video hits those web spiders pretty well. Nice job on those quick note transitions and keeping consistency of tone! I'm also a big fan of those special 20's. They're the only ones responsive enough that I feel I don't have to put through the "overblow" modification process. Very nice!

Here's one with me playing harp and attempting to sing at a jam session a few years back.

Here's one from the same place, where you actually see the sound guy come over and stiff me on the volume!

Here's one from a couple of weeks ago playing at another jam session with some friends of mine. I'm completely full of a bad cold in this one and sniffling like a demented fool hahaha!

@Kingley

Really enjoyed your videos. Your singing was good and I really enjoyed your playing! It looked like you were having fun and vocals can definitely be challenging. I just recently started training and it's not easy if you haven't really been working through those vocal exercises and pushing through sets on vocals. Dirty deal on the soundman... You were drowning things out a bit with awesome, but it's too bad that he hit it right in the middle of you pushing that lick. Nothing is worse than playing harp sets when you're sick, but you held it together nicely. Well done!

@Pistolcat

So much fun! I love that track you're playing to and the video style you put down on this. At first, it had a bit of a "Tequila" feel to the song and then moved into a clearly blues'y lick. Great work! The page does okay on my PC, but I'm sure others are having difficulty with it if you are too. A page break should be on the way though.

There sure are a lot of good vids here. I have been enjoying watching them as the new ones appear. Keep them up. Everyone shows a different aspect of harp playing.

There's a lot of talented people on this forum. Singing and harp playing. Great vids guys. Stopped over in Santa Monica for 36 hours on way back from Canada to Oz. Had a jam with my friend's daughter, She played a banjo because there were no guitars in the house. Plenty of mistakes but having fun just jammin'.

These are all great fun to listen to--and learn a few licks I can steal. It might be time for somebody to start a "Harmonica Jams - Post Your Videos Here! II" thread. I would do it--but I don't have anything new to post yet--this one is getting unwieldy.

Maybe make 1 more rule: try not to post vids in a huge format that makes me scroll sideways to read the text?
