Is this possible? How? I have a custom wood mic from Blows Me Away that I really enjoy, but find I still gravitate towards my Ultimate 57 as I play mostly rock with effects. The bullet makes just about anything sound great for blues or overdriven harp.

I've always felt, since first starting, that a small bullet shell with a SM58/57 type shell would be my dream mic. Thoughts?

I seem to recall that Thunderharp Mikes were 545 elements and transformers built into bullet shells. Google may help on that.

I fit a sm57 style element with transformer inside an old astatic shell from the 40's. It be real tough gettin on in a jt or shure shell but others can be done. I dont know if this is true either but maybe think about replacing the huge transformers in those things with a smaller one or just cut the on/off switch of of it and just use the element

Mike,

I've heard that Sugar Blue has a 58 element in his bullet mic.

It is very difficult to fit one of those elements in a decent bullet shell. They're a lot longer than you think and bullet shells taper to the rear. You can reduce the size of the element by taking it out of its cartridge, which leaves its angel hair wires exposed - VERY easy to break and VERY difficult to repair. And then there's that pesky internal transformer. And then there's the fact that you can't cup a 57 element , sealing/opening the rear vent - when its in a bullet shell. And then there's the fact that they just don't sound that different anyway. If you like a 57, why not just play a 57? My cat is licking my cashews. Gotta go.

Well for me i love to look of an old mic so for louder gigs where I cant use a bullet or something through the Masco to sing through I use my astatic with the sm element. Still has the look also for mine and many other the sm shell is not easy to hold atleast in my opinion so the bullet solves that issue.

These will fit in a Argonne shell or astatic 600 but thats such a rare shell i doubt many have those

That's a great photo, JD - thanks for posting it. And I remind everyone that in an SM57's barrel is a transformer that needs to be mounted somewhere. It COULD be externalized.

why not just go with one of greg's bulletized mics? you get the cup of a small bullet when you need it, but it has the element you want.. or is it just cosmetics we are after here?

Is that why Pat Ramsey had such a huge mic?

I want a bullet strictly for posturing, so this is a very conceded goal, lol. I have rehearsal tonight and will be using my custom wood mic. I think it sounds better through a PA then when I record it. What I like about the SM57 is that it doesn't overwhelm you with mids.

I have weird taste tonally. I packed up for tonight before recording anything, lol. Here is an old one where I tried my three main mics through the same Digitech Patch:

http://mikefugazzi.com/files/DKBLCH_FIRE_SM57_RE10_GB.mp3

You can hear the changes in bottom end from the Fireball to SM57 to the RE10 to the Bullet. With the bullet I have, which again is a blues monster, I lose the bottom end and gain mids. I think I think I gain a lot of mids, but it is the missing bottom end that creates that illusion...maybe.

I LOVE my Ultimate 57, but the wood mic, which obviously cost me a lot more too, is just sooooo attractive. I just don't need blues telephone tone all the time. I am not knocking that sound, but I think I am not big on mids. I really just need to find a blues band to play in, lol.

That clip above is about as distorted as I'd set anything up.

You can hear here:

http://mikefugazzi.com/files/Sans_Amp_Mic_Test.mp3

That the tone as you work up the harp is very warm and responds to fast playing. This is just using the Sans Amp as an analog DI. The other mic, an AKG D5 sounds fine, but isn't nearly as warm and the highs are a bit too hi-fi. You get the mid honk from the bullet on the bottom end. It is more obvious as you cup tight, but that's also how you add bottom end.

I am sorta trying to push a square peg into a round hole, I get that. I am thrilled to have the sweet custom bullet, really. I would like to use it as much as possible, but I am not getting to do much bluesy stuff at all. I will cherish the mic for a long, long time, but I want it to get a lot of use, lol.

Finally, after about two years off, I've found people to play with, and the SM57 type tone with effects is what I am being asked to do. No biggie, I guess.

I am sure it is a very limited market.

I hope people understand I am sorta thinking outloud, and that I am not disappointed with the bullet I have. It is great, and I did buy it to be a "blues" mic. It is much more attractive than my other mics, and I've seen other attractive bullets. In the end, it is something the audience can actually sorta see from stage.

Totally and completely OT to the OP, but I just GOTTA point out that this quote by Mr. Heumann above, "My cat is licking my cashews. Gotta go.", is quite possible the best thing I've read on the internet all week. Perhaps it's cause I'm a cat lover too. Perhaps it's because it's a damn funny double entendre. Perhaps it's because it's both!!

Okay, sorry to have barged in, please continue!

what about a stubby like the Shure 561 ?
Should fit in a bullet. Originally for gooseneck paging situations; it's tailored to voice frequency.
Frequency response is 40-10k Hz vs. 40-15k Hz for the SM57
