After spotting rbeetsme's nice green Chinese bullet in the for sale thread, I find myself curious. Three different current production harp mics use this same shell. The Superlux D112, the Digital Reference Red Howler, and the Peavey H5/H5-C. The shape and size of the shell is obviously drawn from the lines of the Shure 520's. The Peaveys are easy to distinguish because they possess the on/off switch on the port quarter, amidships. But....

Are there any subtle differences between the Superlux and the Howler?

First gut reaction I have is no. Like so many things made in China, the same copied design is probably sold to different mic makers who put their own components and cosmetics in and on them. I know that Shure had slight variations to their bullets over the years, but has anyone ever taken the time to get a close look at the Superlux and Howler, both inside and out, to check for any differences?

Well they are different colours and obviously it's well known that red mics make you sound like Rod Piazza and teal? coloured mics make you sound like Lester Butler :-)

Seriously though I think they are the same mic just with different branding.

the shell houses the real business end of things- the element. The makers of those mics are going to put the cheapest ones they can in those mics.

Yes I admit it, I am old school when it comes to bullet mics.

I can't answer your question Hawkeye, but I can provide my own opinion that the Superlux, for the price, is a pretty good mic. I own a 520 with 70s CM element and a JT30 with a MC151, but I gig with my Superlux and am very happy with it.

@MVLUN

I feel the same way. For over a year now, I've gigged with my Peavey Cherry Bomb, and it's been a real trooper with pretty good tone.
