Before Sam hooked up with Anson Funderberg he played ever so often sitting in with bands in clubs around Jackson Ms.in the 80s. My fondest memories of our relationship was picking him up down on Farrish street where he lived, taking him to the clubs, him blowing everyone away with his harp abilities not to mention his singing. Then late night harp lessons at my place. If youve never heard him sing and play do yourself a favor. Theres never been another like him. OH yea Sam played drums for Elmore James. Great Memories.
I read his bio. It was a good read, he had an interesting life. He was a multi-instrumentalist, and toured around with some of the greats. He seems often over-looked when people make lists of great harp players though... I dunno why. ---------- ------------------ The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"
Sam was the first real blues harp player I saw live. Being a guitar player, I went to see Anson. But it was Sam who blew me away. That was the first time I considered learning harp. I remember as they led him out to the mic, shuffling slowly with those coke-bottle glasses, I could tell I was about to see someone special. And brother he didn't disappoint!
I and many other knowledgable harp fans remember the night at a small club called George Sreet Grocery in Jackson that Sam defended his turf and cut heads with Kim Wison and Fingers Taylor. Sam wasnt going to let the young bloods off easy. Hellava night for harp fans.
Here is a link to an interview I did with Sam Meyers back in the early 1990s when he was here in Raleigh for the Bull Durham Blues Festival. I did not know him personally but he was a pleasure to talk with.
