My father told me if any ever asks how much money you make, tell them you don’t do bad but you wouldn’t work for a penny less!

Kim has been a Premier Attraction in the music world for decades now – I wonder what his average salary has been over the past 20 years…

I'm sure he doesn't do bad, but doesn't work for a penny less ;-)

I know folks who have booked/looked into booking Kim/Thunderbirds, I don't think, however, this is a suitable topic for public debate...nor a good indicator of anything relevant, strikes me as pretty personal. Perhaps you should book him?

Just on principle - I don't care one way or another, personally - seems to me that once you enter into that comprehensive realm of being a "public figure", your privacy boundaries change considerably. On that principle, I don't think I'd agree that the topic is "pretty personal" and unfair territory for "public debate".

@ Harp-er - If he were a public servant, paid via taxing the general population I'd agree with you to an extent. But you make a choice to pay to attend a gig, or buy a CD...you must figure that it's worth it before you put your hand in your pocket.

This is a "public" forum, anyone in the world with internet access can read anything posted here, should we all be required to quote our income on our posts, or feel obliged to reveal it to anyone who inquires? You are free to decide what you want to do, if you want to know what Kim, or anyone else, earns then ask them...and good luck with that...;-)

Whatever Kim earns, he deserves it all. He has worked very hard for decades performing his craft. Which isn't an easy task by any means. I met him once just walking down the street and talked with him briefly. He was a really nice humble guy and very approachable.

@5F6H - I think you've missed my point. I'm talking about "public figure", which includes much more than elected politicians. This category is, if I'm not mistaken, even legally recognized, with certain attendant implications (I'm not a lawyer, so let's not get into asking me to define what all that is, please). That's a different category from you and me, who are, presumably, not "public figures" in that legal sense.

I got to know Kim a bit back in the 90's when I had him in my sights (as Convention Director for SPAH) to appear as an artist.

Took me 2 years of getting to know him before I could consummate an arrangement....

What Kim is, is a hard working blue collar type who loves what he does. If you treat him fairly and honor your agreements with him, he is a great guy. If he enjoys the experience, he goes above and beyond the agreement. If you don't hold up your end of the agreement, he can be a handful.

The T-Birds don't play constantly. As a matter of fact, they really do just a handful of gigs each year. His side projects keep him busy and he is not above doing lots of small gigs with pick up bands. For instance, that great video posted here (in which he has a conversation with a lady in the audience) looked to be a local pick up blues band in a HS Auditorium with a very small crowd.

I don't believe he is rich - but is making a decent living doing what he loves most.

I don't believe that anyone gets wealthy playing Blues. I don't think that Kim Wilson is any exception to the rule.

When I was a kid, Muddy Waters lived a few blocks away from me. His home was quite modest and nowhere near a palatial estate. I don't believe that he was a very wealthy man. He used to buy champagne from a store where I works. He bought quality stuff.

Kim played on a Mark Knopfler album in 2012.
Has anyone checked it out?
I heard one track that made me stop and listen.

gmacleod15:

There was another thread here about this project.

Mark plays about 1/3 of the double CD set in the blues vein. Kim plays on all of them and it is a textbook study in restraint and support. Kim sounds deceptively simple at first listen, but repeated listening is recommended to really hear how great Kim plays on this project.

======================

That may have had more to do with Muddy's acumen as a businessman. From conversations I've had with Dick Waterman and Charlie Musselwhite, John Lee Hooker was said to be "Rolling Stones rich." He read every contract and never got burned, and watched his pennies, it seems. Admittedly Ray Charles is sort of a different class -- but he died with a TON of dough in the bank. B.B. King has done quite well since around the time that song with U2 came out (prior to that, not so much).

As to Kim, I do suspect (and I certainly HOPE since he deserves it) that he does okay financially. He owns the Fabulous Thunderbirds franchise, so these days it's really "Kim Wilson and some hired guys playing Fabulous Thunderbirds songs." I've heard that his guys get medical insurance, which to me would indicate there's both some dough rolling in, and some thought being put to the business end of the operation.

Also, just observationally, I've heard him say in an interview that he likes to play golf. Not generally a game for guys living hand to mouth. And much to Kim's credit, he long ago traded the bottle for the weight room. The guy's sober and in great shape, and that certainly leads to making better decisions in general.

At any rate, I hope he lives a very long and comfortable life, making all the music he can.
