To all the amp guys out there. I have an old extension valve amp that was designed to be a stereo speaker for an old valve record player. I have rigged it so it can take a mic and I really like the tone I get from it. However it is not really practical to take to a jam too often. I recently bought a VHT special 6 amp head and 12" speaker cabinet. It's a great amp but I find the speaker needs a lot of volume in order to break up which is the tone I'm after. Would a cab with a 2 or 3 eliptical speakers inside sound any good with this amp? Can you recommend any speakers with early break up I could use?
Many thanks and

As JD wrote, if it sounds good it is good. But I'm not sure oval speakers will get you where you want to be. Generally, speakers get more breakup when they have a smooth non-ridged cone, I think. Webers best harp speakers are smooth. I prefer the Eminence Lil Buddy speaker in that amp, but speaker preference is totally subjective.
Remember too that the breakup sound you are after does not necessarily come from a particular speaker. Playing technique and mic technique have a lot to do with it. Keep working at it and you will get there. ---------- -Rick Davis The Blues Harp Amps Blog The Mile High Blues Society
