Talked to a local pump organ repair man who has informed me that the 100yr. old plus reeds in these units that rarely go bad are vertically milled.MMMMMM I smell a conspiracy. They new long ago how to make them last longer.

A while ago, I had an idea for a crazy harp design. The single mount reeds of an accordion looked like they would work better for the crazy idea than reed plates, but when I mentioned it, I was warned that accordion reeds weren't designed for moisture.
I suspect it's harder to play 'too hard' on an accordion. (I'm still looking for cheap accordion or concertina reeds to see if my crazy idea would actually work. Seydel had a harmonica that may have done the same thing years ago. Dave Payne posted the patent for it on his site once, but the drawings weren't good enough to see if they were dealing with it the same way I was thinking.
