Hi chopper. I have built a stompbox & tomorrow I am getting some piezo pickups (dual) which I was recommended. The cost ca $30. The box cost me nothing ie some old bits of 3 ply which now looks like a fine piece of furniture.

In a day or so I will know how it sounds.

My amp is a Casino 10 busking amp with mic and guitar inlets. My mic is a Shure PG58. I am also getting a delay pedal.

Trying to put it all together is a challenge ie to find what does and doesn't work.

I'm very interrested in your success.

I tried to make one recently. I used a piezo mic, but it just sounded like a foot on a board.

I'm looking for more of a Porch Board sound, without the cost.

Hi, now have my stompbox fitted out with dual piezo's and can get variances of sound depending on where I stomp. Have one piezo on the top (inside) bottom LH corner & positioned the other on the side (inside) on top RH corner.

Not real happy with the sound yet ie still a bit too much like a metronome sound but I'm wanting more of a thud. Have more playing around with sound deadening materials & best choice of footwear. Will get there.

I think if you use heavy plywood you end up with a solid stompbox but not much of a thud sound , more like a rim shot , I am kinda happy with my stompbox made from cigarbox , but it is not very solid .

Stompboxes. Anyone thought of suspending metal bottle tops on the underside of the top of the stompbox to give it cymbal shimmer type sound?

Ant138: I've often thought about what kind of harp tattoo I might get. I don't have any tats yet, but my wife has plenty, some of which I drew. My main concern is to not make it look to cheesey, which I think would be pretty easy to do with what you typically think of as "harmonica" designs. I like the idea of making it more abstract, kind of like the stylized harp comb that I designed for the MBH t-shirts (actually, Preston came up with the idea, and I just ran with it), but I'm not sure how abstract I should go with it. Anyway, maybe we should start another thread to discuss this (eg. "Harp Tattoos..."), but I'm curious as to what kind of designs you have in your head. It's obvious you've been around the tat gun a few times, so I would value your opinion. The Harmonica has literally changed my life and even saved my marriage (to detailed to go into), so of all things to get inked, that's the one that I really feel strongly about...

Sorin :Have looked at the Ellis boxes and yes they look and sound good but are very expensive.

Tooka : saw a guy playing a stomp box at markets and on his sandal he had rigged up ca 3 to 4 of the little cat bells. The type were the enclosed balls that people put on cats collars so that they can't get native birds. I think court jesters are portrayed with them on the end of their hats and the toes of their turned up booties. Prior to seeing this set up I was also considering the bottle top idea.

Update > whilst going through some cupboards I discovered a box that we keep our best silverware cutlery in. Popped a cheap Karaoke mic inside and voila - magic sound - deep thud. It's a bit of an antique & I will have some explaining to do when 'someone' finds our best silverware stored in a plastic container!
