In MO there is a lot of players blaming or complaining on this forum about the harmonicas they have shelled out money for:
Remember before the internet you just got stuck in without moaning
Remember it aint easy, it takes years
Custom harps are grear but there is no shortcut
There are some brilliant young players; I dont hear them moanin'
I got a Jack Daniels whiskey promotion harp free one day and its cheap so make the best of it..

I like all of mine, and none of them were perfect out of the box. They are tools. All different, all special.

I got one hand on the keyboard and one hand on a Piedmont Blues D harp. You don't want to know where my third hand is. No complaining here.

I started playing harp in the dark ages--before the internet. A customiser was someone who worked on cars.Every once in a while I'd get a really bad OOTB harp, every once in a while I'd get a really sweet one.I'd cherish the really good ones and dread the day they went south. I don't miss those days. Nowadays with all this wonderful info at the click of a mouse,I can at least improve the bad ones.Knowledge is power.

I my opinion, Everyone blames the harps because:

1) Harps are fickle. Getting one to play well takes work.

2) You have to play so many different harps. Say I've been practicing on an F harp all week. When I go to my A harp, I think "man this harp is hard to play!" The converse is also true.

3) Most people buy stock harps. None of these are worked on to the same extent as other professional grade instruments are(except save electric guitars, I've heard which are notoriously easy to make, as instruments go).

4) They are fun to fiddle with, and cheap too.

5) Harp work is difficult, so most consider a harp a consumable.

That is my opinion.

I think Ryanmortos put it best in anothert thread - "the more I play, the better my harps get." or somthing like that. I do not understand why a harmonica cannot be consistent out of the box. Period. I also do not think it should be necessary to be a part time jeweler and need to work on it. But I suppose if you want to be as good as you can be and your hapr be as good as it can be, you need to make sure your harp is. Oh well. We get plenty of data on how to.
