Anybody interested in a few day long harp mod workshop?
I'll teach you from start to finish how to make a bad ass harp. How to properly seal and precision flat sanding of combs will be covered.
I would supply all of the materials needed to build a badass death harp of death and destruction.
We don't have to just do harp mods, I could show you guys how to play it too.

What are the chances of recording the workshop?
There seem to be a fair amount of folks from across the pond (or the tip of Africa in my case), and I for one would buy it in a heartbeat.

I don't know about recording it. I have to think this through, I love teaching but I also need to make a living and making harps is how I do it right now.
I could always go to Europe to give one over there for the people across the pond. ----------

DaDoom,
I'm trying to work with you guys. If there is demand and a place to do it, I would fly across the pond. I would need help if I'm to do it over there.

what about price? Individuals have been paying me $1000 for a week of focused in instruction at my house. Part of that fee includes staying in my home.
I don't expect $1000 from everybody in a group setting but I can't do this for free either. At what price point does this work for everybody? This is what I do to make a living and I don't want to create a tonne of competitors nor loose too many customers.
Those that have worked with me in the past (on any subject) know that I do not hold back. I don't keep secrets.
You will know what I know at the end of the workshop.
If there is enough demand, I could travel to certain cities to do workshops. It would be nice to also have a playing workshop like what Jason and I did with Rockin in the Rockies. ----------

As grateful as I am for folk who are willing to share their knowledge, I fully appreciate that the same knowledge needs to bring home the bacon.
Also, I think I underestimated the amount of knowledge that's involved (It sounds as if your alumni will able to churn out mini Buddha harps). Having to capture that on film properly won't be easy.

Id bet there's enough interest in the NE for you to come out here too. I bet if you consider people interested in MD, WV, PA, NJ you'd find enough to warrant coming out for a week somewhere NE.
The tricky part for me is getting the time off work for a week especially since I spent all my '09 time. They screwed me last time I thought I had a week off.
How many hours in total do you think the Buddha workshop would involve?
I dont think everyone would walk away with the goal of becoming a pro at it. I think most of us just want to learn for ourselves. I know I have no desire to make a living customizing harmonicas.

Well I could show everybody the basics over the course of a day but I think it would be better to do it over three days or so and have all participants actually build a badass harp from scratch.
If we do it in Phoenix, then I have access to my machines for a real demonstration and for the participants to use. ----------

I am certainly interested. A three day weekend would fit best for me. If its in West Virginia, I could even drive. My price point for something like this would be a couple hundred bucks. But, with several such people, Buddah could make $1000 in three days instead of a week.

Great Idea Buddha. I'm in for sure I think 2-3 days makes more sense. I live in Oregon so AZ is great. I'll leave pricing up to you. It would be nice to have a few weeks advanced notice. Thanks!

A long weekend (3 days) in the NE, maybe around Philly would work for me. As for cost I think i'd pay $100 a day for instruction. Add in travel plane/ or 6 hrs by car and lodging that would be about $800 in cost. I think that would be pushing my threshold.

How about a SE, NE, SW, NW. 4 workshops. Covers the whole country. Not to far away for anyone. If you could clear a couple or three grand for each workshop, might be worth your while to travel. I would love to see one in the SE, maybe in Adam's locale of MS. You have a lot of followers all over the US and abroad. You come to the SE I'm in.

Chris,
If you travel to the Mississippi Delta, or anywhere close, I'm in!! Would love to have you here to teach your craft.
I'm still enjoying those harps you built for me. Would love to learn to use those fine tools you built.

I think it would be cool if you could do this as a pre-spah workshop, that way if people are interested in the workshop and spah all they'd have to do is fly out to the convention site a few days earlier. It might be a little more justifiable for people living overseas. Although I realise it's going to be awhile until the next spah, and it sounds like you're interested in doing this sooner than later. As far as losing business, I doubt that'll be much of a problem, there's a big difference between knowing how to do something and being able to do it well. That and the incredible amount of work involved will keep most people purchasing custom harps. As much as I like knowing how to work on my harps, for the most part I feel that for the amount of time and work I'd have to invest into making just one good harp, it's worth it to me to buy from someone who really knows what they're doing and has a lot of experience.

that could work. Good idea Ryan.
SPAH will be in Minneapolis next year, that's where I'm from so I could always get tools from my dad. We could probably just do the seminar at his place.

Minneapolis would be great, hell of a lot closer to Chicago than Phoenix. But still I would be down to go to AZ as long as I could save up enough money in the mean time. If you could somehow determine a definite price, I would be able to let you know for sure if I could attend or not. At this point the issue isn't if I'm willing to spend the money, its if I have the money that I'm willing to spend!

I figured it would ultimately save people money by cutting the travel expenses. People who live nowhere near pheonix or minneapolis would only have to buy one roundtrip ticket. And if the events happened consecutively I could use my vacation time to take the week off work instead of having to plan and work out two separate trips. Jon instead of spending the money now why wouldn't you just put the money aside and save it for whenever the workshop is scheduled? Anyways, it was just a suggestion, I thought it would work out better for more people.
