Just picked up a Marine Band in the paper box for $4 at a pawn shop. Didn't look like it had ever been played. I sterilized it and tried it, the 3 draw was stuck. Popped the cover off aligned the reed and it plays great! My guess because of the cardboard box is that it is a little bit older, maybe 80's.

Anyway just had to share! :)

Nice!

How many nails in between the tines on the bottom plate?

And what color (shade of blue) is the trim on the box?

That will help determine the date it was made.

the trim is a dark purply blue. I see 3 nails along the back and two at each end.

any ideas what that means?

Quality really took a nose-dive with regards to Hohner harps made in the 80s. This harp was made before that happened.

" I see 3 nails along the back and two at each end. any ideas what that means?"

it means that there are 7 nails per plate plus 8 for both covers which makes a total of 22.
i'll assume what arzajac was getting at. if there were 6 nails in the bottom plate, those were not good years for Hohners quality. if there were 7 you are probably better off. if there were 8 nails you had a pre-war Hohner for 4 bucks and YAAAY!!.

Cool! Thanks for the info and the offers! I will however be keeping this harp. I love it. I have not been a big fan of the marine bands but this one is different. Maybe its the vintage.

Anyway, thanks again.

A student of mine, "Soulchicken", got into buying old marine bands on EBAY and reworking them as custom harmonicas.

They came out really nice.....

He had a good career going as customizer, but got side tracked as he landed a job playing bass in a country band around Savannah that has exploded in popularity.
