Here is a list of the ten most popular tracks on Spotify this year. Some of them are catchy in their own way, and I actually like a few of them a lot, but by and large the style is not what I would chose.

Top 10

I think it's worth giving them a listen. There were a couple I couldn't get through, 7 and 10 in particular. Some of them had some pretty neat hooks though, and some had some neat instrumentation. I just thought I'd throw this out there as a counter argument to 'can you make money in this business?' question. Maybe the more you sound like this, the more money you can make! Which of course brings us back around to the old question- have you ever wondered if the 'selling your soul to the devil' question didn't resonate so strongly because it's what the previous generation thinks when we hear the up and coming generations music and wonder what it would take to be famous. I'd was pretty familiar with 2 of the songs before (1&3), and recognized 2 more as songs I'd heard parts of before (2&6).

I liked #1,which surprised me. Most of it was dreck and I'm of the opinion that two of the artists have no talent whatsoever.

Tuckster, which two?

I found I did like Sia's voice.

I might look around YouTube. Some of those might have interesting acoustic covers. I know the Gotye one has some really creative covers-

Nate-it's just my opinion. I saw both of them perform on one of the national morning shows. I watched their "performances" pretty closely and wondered why they were so popular. One did the rap spoken word not sung thing with plenty of eye candy, samples and no real instruments except maybe drums. The other lip synced the words while also being surrounded by eye candy while shaking her ample booty. Without the studio magic, they would both be waiting their turn at the karaoke bar.

The way I understand it, Gotye, used to play in a band called the Basics, and his mates call him Wally. I heard a few Basics songs on a national (government broadcaster) radio show called "Australia All Over". They had one called "Fly In, Fly Out" about working in remote locations and not seeing the family much. I also heard them play "have love will travel". I think he is a real muso, who cracked the big time after putting in a fairly long apprenticeship.
