I have been spending a couple of hours every Sunday afternoon in Balboa Park while my son is in rehearsal with the youth symphony. There are lots of outdoor corridors with interesting acoustics and I spend some time playing harp in various areas. Most people just ignore me. So far all of the people who have responded have been positive, singing along, dancing, giving thumbs up telling me that like it etc.

Today, as I put my harp away and headed up to meet my son during his break, someone ran over and called to me “Were you playing Bach on the harmonica? That was beautiful, I love Bach!” This was the second time I have gotten a positive comment from a passerby while playing Bach in public. I guess good music is timeless and adaptable to any instrument.

The pieces I played were” Jesu, Joy of a Man’s Desiring”, and “That Sheep May Safely Graze”. Has anyone else found any classical pieces that suit the harmonica and are effective on the street?

Just for the record, I did not put a hat out, so I was not busking, that would require a permit. Someone on this forum refered to this as "n-asking", I kind of like the term.

I think that is awesome. I should drive down and hear you sometime.

On my breaks at work, I often walk down a back street practicing. I was working on a Chopin piece that I thought sounded pretty good. I was using a Big River tuned to True Chromatic.

I can play a snippet of Bach's 'Little Feuge', just one melody, not all the counterpoint and stuff. It's actually one of my all time favorite pieces of music.

Babloa Park is pretty cool too! I didn't get to visit it the last time I was out visiting my Dad, except to cut through by car briefly but I've always enjoyed it when I've been able to go.

Snipper's is quite the operative word when trying to play classical on the diatonic without overblows. If I choose carefully I can find a good chunk of music without accidentals I can't play. I am working on the ovrerblows in order to try to remove some of the restrictions of the instrument.

Balboa park is a great place to play. I love the reactions of the children too young to know that staring is impolite as they try to figure out how I am making that sound with my hands.

I may need to do a comparison that FMWoodeye's comments have brought to my mind and break out my trombone to see the difference in reactions from the passersby between harp and trombone.
