Had some fun with this a.m on facebook thought I would bring it here. Why does this song bother bluesman so much ? First off it's not my favorite song but whenever the band plays it the dance floor fills up with chicks that prompts other people to dance, drinks start flowing owners happy, band is happy and crowd is happy. How did this song ever become "Free Bird" to bluesman ? Yeah I know it's not the blues but should you not please the owner & crowd?

Fun song. No reason not the make your own arrangement up, something that's fun for you to play. Make it enjoyable instead of trying to recreate parts someone else had fun playing on a record. Audience always loves the result. ---------- The Iceman

It is Tramp beat blues- or close enough. It's not liked because it's one of the most requested tunes and some guys get sick of playing it. ----------

I could never understand the problem. Altho I probably never played the song as many times as all the others, it caused the most problems for my band. I love the song - they hated it.... I told them "You find me one song that fills the dance floor faster and it's replaced"...they could not find one!!!
But I also wanted to do Wild Thing and Wooly Bully... I lost those battles. ---------- If it ain't got harp - it ain't really blues!!!!

This was originally done by Wilson Pickett, who's actually better known as a southern styled soul singer. The real groove isn't the same as the Tramp groove, which is often used when playing this tune.
Besides Stormy Monday, this is the most often played, as well as the most often BADLY butchered tune in open jams to the point where many just hate hearing it again and again. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I think this is a great song. It does stir up a party. It's in my list of songs that I sing but normally I decide when and I prepare for it. Here is a video. This was on a recent cruise where I did some karaoke. I usually prepare for this but not this time. It was kind of impromptu and my wife pushed me to sing this even though I kept telling her I wasn't ready for it. She swore the crowd would love it anyway. I guess she was right. I don't know the woman dancing behind me they just wandered up there. The last woman walking up also. Don't know her. Don't mind the vocals. One of those nights...lol.

i'm one of the guys who have played Mustang Sally inumerable times. i was hoping Funky Broadway would supplant Mustang but it never caught on.
it fills the dance floor like Brick House(Classic Rock cover bands take notice)-works every time.
i refuse to play it. can't do it no more. the first t hundred times was plenty enough.
i pick tyrone davis to fill the dance floor. or james brown. more fun and they work just as good or better. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.

Listen to Pickett do Mustang and while I understand why one might think it is like "Tramp," it really isn't. No more than Clapton's version of "Further On Up the Road" is like Bobby Bland's version. Let's face it, EC's version is just a unembellished shuffle while Bland's is a mid tempo texas shuffle with an interesting backing and the fantastic guitar work of the underrated and under appreciated Pat Hare.
I think some bands are a bit lazy and hit the "tramp default switch" and do Mustang with Tramp riff. Too bad. I'd get sick of playing "Tramp" hook in a 12 bar format. Yawn.
Mustang is not on our set list, but it does get requested and we will do it. Why? 9 times out of ten, women request it and it automatically packs the dance floor and the response is terrific. Played correctly, it is a great dance song. Sure, I'd rather play "Midnight Hour" but you've got to give the people what they want. And yes I'm all for more Tyrone Davis tunes.
