Guess what i got a new mic yesterday it was a green bullet mic infact!! Then when i got back at like 11 o'clock i plugged it in but for some strange reason my mum prefered this other mic that i was borrowing a little skytech one, the one with the small microphone, i think you coud fit it in a match box. Which do you think would be best? The room is quite small so that may play a part in it.

is that a brand new green bullet? the elements in recent years have dropped in quality, changed from Shure controlled magnetic to some lesser dynamic element.
perhaps your mum likes the clarity of the smaller mic, a lot of folks don't "get" the idea about a warm round tone like that of a good bullet mic.
what amp are you using?

Here's what I did to my new bullet mic. I bought a shure 99b86 element from Ron Sunshine, then bought the proper gasket from Jeff Spoor at harpmicgaskets.com and voila I have a new mic with a volume control and the "sound". That is the sound I was looking for.

I have a few 520DX bullets as well as an old 520, a JT-30 with a Shure Black lable CM. I think the newer DX's sound fine. as a matter of fact i can control my tone vs. feedback a little better with the newer ones. (playing through a Fender Pro Jr. that's been re-tubed and re-speakered for harp) its really hard to say what works/sounds best. its a personal thing. a friend of mine uses an old japanese tape recorder mic through a fender Princeton and its magic!)

Bluesharper...get yourself a little valve amp for Christmas. Something like a Epiphone Vlave Junior or a Fender 600 Champion and that green bullet will sound great through it. You can pick these amps up really cheap and you'll notice the difference right away between the Kustom amp you have now and a valve amp. Oisin

The 520DX is the biggest, heaviest mic you can buy. The built in cable makes storage inconvenient, and it will fail, inside the mic, where you will find the cable is buried in glue (a well-intentioned effort to forestall the eventual but guaranteed failure) - making it difficult to repair. No matter what you like about that element there are others that do "it" better.
I bought a 520DX when I was starting to play amplified. In retrospect, it was a waste of money - because it isn't worth fixing the problems. Better to start with an older 520 - the shell is lighter and smaller in diameter, and the controlled magnetic elements are better for most purposes, except perhaps singing through the mic. In the case of Shure bullets, the older the shell, the smaller the diameter AND the better the element.

I have that same shell Jon and it's much easier handling. Greg is right on about the Elements. Most Blues players I have played with, in front of or talked to prefer the tone from an American made White CM 99A86, 99B86, 99F86, 99G86 If you are getting better response and tone from a 520DX then there may be something wrong with the Element or the Ground or the wiring or you are after a far different sound and it's a moot point. I've had several 520D Mexican Element mics and the tone isn't horrible but I've ripped every cord out of them and replaced them with screw on connectors. Of course I drink less now and step on cords alot less.

I get more output with the 520, and JT-30 which have a 99A86 and a 9B86 respectivly. I can control feed back a little better with the DX's that I have. a give and take. i'm going to pick up an EQ for the hotter element mic's and i think my problem will be solved.
