<Don't forget its a desert island. There are no backing tracks, amps or audience. It's purely which one would give you the most pleasure accoustically.>>
I'm afraid that when you phrase it that way, I'd have to say a 16 hole chromatic. Probably some level of blasphemy on a "blues" forum. But, you asked it the way you did.
If it had to be a 10 holer fistwhistle, I'd have to say Ab.
Definitly my custom A harp. A is my favorite key, it just seems right tonally. Not to low, yet not to high. My second choice would be a Bflat. ---------- Brandon Bailey
I'll have to go along with A harp. The low A is nice and low and the high A can be played (and bent) without attracting the neighbourhood dogs. I love playing 3rd position on an A harp too. It's a good all-rounder.
I'd pick an A or a G, although if I was stuck on an island it might be better to have a chrom. Might as well learn some theory while I'm there. Just make sure you don't get stuck with a minor. It may be a deserted island, but there are still laws.
I feel like a total outcast here... I happen to like my D harp a lot. Why do all you guys like low harps so much? I like the funky sound of a higher harp like D or Eb and I'm not a big fan of harps like G because they seem slow and harder to play. ---------- "Without music, life would be a mistake" -Nietzsche

Preston, by the way, Seydel do high As. The Session is one. I think they do others. Have a butchers at their website ---------- 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchen; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty' - Frank Zappa
A and Bb. I also am finding that I really like an Ab Harpmaster. Either one or all 3 of the above keys is fine when playing alone.
Am doing a course on Irish & Bluegrass - fiddle tunes which require using a D. Couldn't handle the high pitch /tin whistle sound so invested in a Low D Sp20 which is a nice harp.
All in all I favour the sound of lower keys or switching to Low Ds Es and Fs if needed.

since i'de be all alone, on a desert island with only one harp, i'd really want one to convey how sad i'd be all alone. The A would be a great choice agreed all around, however i may choose my bminor lee oskar. Such a sad tone, tragic and beautiful, this way all those feelings of being tottaly alone on a desert island would really becoming through the sound of that minor.
11 A's 2 Ab's 3 Bb's 2 C's 1 F#'s 1 D's 1 Eb's 1 B minor 2 Chromatics
The A's and D's can play together pretty easily, and the Bb's and Eb will work easily as long as the Eb's don't side with the Ab's. The chromatic players will probably have to sit in with the guys in the weird keys unless everyone learns to play in a bunch of positions.
