I just lost a cover plate screw and replaced it with a 4mm/40 screw and regular nut from the local hardware store. It works great. It cost about .75 cents.

I find the cover plate screws to be a real PIA on most harps.
And my L/Os are the worst imo.
So.i drill out the holes a bit oversize and stick a 12mm bolt with a decent nut through them.About 5$ for a pack of 20.

1) I like the 'industrial' look it gives them (but this a very subjective opinion for sure)

2) with the extra length on the bolts i can just undo one and swing the plates out of the way to check and adjust the reeds.

3) I never pick up a Harp the wrong way up 'cos it is very obvious that the nut is on the bottom.
10$ for a little bolt/screw geez!

Well...

http://harpcase.com/harmonicaparts.html

You can get a set of FOUR for under $5! I've actually met the guy who makes these for Hetrick...they are 100% made in the USA. The work great, and are slotted for a flat head...so stripping is damn near impossible!

This is why I dislike Hohner. It's hard to get spare parts and spare parts itself costs too much, that it's easier to get another harp for the same spare parts.

Wow. I use the MS cover plate screws which I think look a little nicer, especially after they have had some use (they don't tarnish like the brass ones) - They look a little cheaper for you guys in the US $11 – http://www.hohnershop.com/blues-harp/.

However I live in the UK as they are only €5.55 – http://www.hohner-cshop.eu/en/Harmonica/Richter-Diatonic/MS-System/Blues-Harp/

Ditto on harpcase.com (Hetrick)

i got four proto types and they are nice!
post type, slotted ala GM. look like a cross
between GM and Crossover screws.

i used all four on an early low F custom experiment of mine where i drilled the holes huge to accept SP/20
screws. Now, it looks sharp.

Nails are better for cover plates. As long as you have a wooden comb.
Failing that, if you buy a crossover or deluxe, they come with two spare bolts already installed in the handy spare bolt holes. That must be why they are so expensive.

When I started out back in the 70's, the only way you got spare parts for diatonic harmonicas were to cannibalize your old ones, and the only parts that were available were for chromatics, so the parts situation today is FAR better than when I started.

As far as spare parts costing more than an individual harmonica goes, unfortunatly it's exactly the same way as it was when I was working in the automotive industry and when you get parts for a car on an individual basis, they ALWAYS wind up costing more if you were to try and rebuild/build a car from scratch by ording each and every individual part seperately as opposed to buying a car as a completed unit, and so that means that's something you gotta live with, like it or not, and that's with ALL companies regardless whether it's a harmonica maker, auto maker, or anything else.
