I live outside the little town - population maybe 400 - of Madrid, NM, about 25 miles south of Santa Fe. In this little town, through which the National Scenic Byway: The Turquoise Trail, Highway 14, runs, there is a saloon, The Mine Shaft Tavern, and next to it is an annex thing that serves the bar's food and drink, and has live music on some weekends. This weekend happens to be an Open Studio thing - there are lots of artists and galleries and other sundry shops in Madrid - and so there are a lot of tourists, and as my wife and a friend and I were walking down the street I heard what sounded like some soul grabbing hill country blues coming from this annex.
"I'm going to see what THAT is" I said and headed over to hear. Sure enough, there's this young guy doing a one man band thing with electric guitars, and two foot drums, one snare and one bass, and a little neck rack harp thrown in for good measure (not his main instrument at all). WOW! This guy is good. Mr. CW Ayon (pronounced "eye own"), based these days out of Las Cruces, NM. I took his card and looked him up online later on.

Do yourself a favor and check him out. Here are some links:

The surviving Kimbrough boys have made him an honorary Kimbrough. Dude!

Wow! Great find! This is the kind of blues that I really really love, and wish that there was more of. Thanks for sharing!

Yes indeed. He's got something very real goin' on. Who would expect to find such a true blue blues guy in New Mexico? They're everywhere!

@Lmrjak - what position are you playing in to play along with his minor key blues? Or are you using natural minor harps?

@ harp-er- I don't own any natural minor harps, just 9 major key harps. I don't have Db,Eb or F# either. I played along with 16 of his songs and wrote the harp key down but I'm not sure about position. To be honest,I couldn't even tell you what songs were in a minor key. I just go by what sounds right but I would like to know and understand more theory. My Ab sounded great on "End of my rope" and I'm thinking that was 2nd position. Do you know?

I guess he's playing that in Eb, so the Ab harp works in second position, but there are some 3rd position minor notes in there like the 3D'', I think. To my ear it sounds like a combination of 2nd and 3rd positions, or second position with an emphasis on some of that minor sounding 3D bend.

His Leavin' Home seems to require 3rd position on the Ab harp, meaning he's playing that in Bbm. Second position on the Ab harp doesn't work right.
Thanks.

@kudzurunner - he gets a lot better in my opinion three years later, now in 2012, than when that was posted 3 years ago. If you haven't already, have a listen to his current stuff.
