Hi. My name is Decker.I am 56 and learning how to play the harmonica.I am finding Addams teaching very helpfull.I am using Hohner Crossover harmonicas. My lungs are not the greatest is there a model of harmonica that might take a little less wind?
The Crossovers are a lovely harp. Don't think in terms of 'wind' think in terms of 'breath'. Breathing through the harmonica as opposed to blowing & sucking. No force should be used. Some keys are easier for beginners ie a C is what most start out with as it is in the middle of the range.
I've got some harps (optimized) that some of the natural leakage has been eliminated from. Otherwise, you'll probably be fine regardless. Your lungs will expand in size. ---------- David www.elkriverharmonicas.com ____________________ At the time of his birth, it was widely accepted that no one man could play that much music so well or raise that much hell. Well thank you all for your comments. And the videos. The one on singing and breathing is very helpfull. Now I do have a nother question. Can anyone recomend a site that will help me through the steps of optimizing the harmonicas that I have? I live in a very remote area and must learn to do things on my own.And thanks again for the replies.
Decker: Welcome! Rupert Oysler has a 2 DVD set that shows how to repair and customize your harps. The set is available from many vendors. You can also find it on eBay. It is a little pricey, but there is some great info on those DVDs. Good luck!
Decker, the best way to learn about optimizing your harp is probably YouTube. Overblow.com has some stuff, and a general search for 'harmonica customization' will turn up a lot of good stuff on YouTube from Richard Sleigh, Elk River Harmonicas, Jason Ricci and lots of others. On Facebook there is Harp REPAIR-

And of course, you can ask any specific questions here and you'll usually get a pretty quick, pretty reliable response. Start with gapping and flat sanding any wooden combs you have. Use the forum search or just ask for specifics. Also Google Kinya Pollard. He has great articles.
