As a middle aged white dude from the Midwest, I got to the blues via a bunch of Southern rock bands and the Britts. I wore out some Jimmy Hall when I was young... What's really scary is how much of his style of playing is still in mine.
I would say that would be Frederic Yonett. He calls his music urban jazz but it is a blend of funk, R&B, and soul. Just an amazing player. No sunglasses and fedora for him, he's rippin' in original stuff and sound. He has sat in w/Stevie Wonder on numerous shows. ---------- Greg Jones 16:23 Custom Harmonicas greg@1623customharmonicas.com 1623customharmonicas.com
Magic Dick should get a mention - J Geils early music was pretty much blue eyed soul and rhythm and blues. His harp parts are certainly very arranged, providing precise hooks like a horn section would.
Curtis Salgado and John Nemeth are great soul singers but don't seem to play harp over the more soul-based material.
Also there's a New Orleans funk band, Galactic - more heavy duty funk than soul, but saxophonist Ben Ellman sometimes plays harp
Also of course there's Adam's youtube lessons on Ray Charles, James Brown etc
Have to disagree on Curtis not playing harp on soul songs.. What he doesn't do is blow through the entire song, it's usually for a little color. Checkout Money Must Think I'm Dead and the Bill Withers cover he does of Who is He and What is He to You..
"I hope you don't mind if I play a little harmonica, I can't afford a saxophone"..
