Rharley replaced the cable on the Prince of Darkness with a switchcraft 5/8's male thread so it takes a Blows-me-away inline volume control. Looks very cool.
He also may have done some boost magic to it, a cap or resistor or something. That would be his customizer secret. Maybe send one to him to upgrade.

@bluemoose
I'm sure Rharly does very good work, but I like to do that stuff myself. I've built all my own amps, mics and harmonicas. I enjoy building stuff.
I doubt he put a resistor in, but a cap is possible knowing you were going to use a volume control.
I don't use volume controls so I'll just put a new cable on and throw the aluminum thingy away.
Not really to much to that! Pretty easy stuff.

I think the 'aluminium thingy' is attached on the ADM 8. I am going to put a switchcraft 2510MP on mine, replace the rubber gaskets (just try rubber washers)..... and possibly a paint job. Watch this space!

@ all ,..
The WirlyBird ('aluminium thingy') I don't believe is part of the ADM 8's as it has a different element than the DM-13's,..
ADM 8's Have a plastic cover attached to the element
( Do Not try to remove )
They share the same transformer tho ,.
Libertad ,yes the 2510MP is the way to go on em ,..The rubber gaskets should be fine unless they are loose,.rubber O- rings will work just fine as replacements ,any hardware should have em.

Sorry I was talking about a different 'aluminium thingy' :-) I meant the element cover, which as you mentioned is fixed and plastic on the ADM8 not loose as with the DM13. It's interested that despite the size difference of the elements there is not a 'huge' difference in sound. With the ADM8 I do cut the treble a little.

Thanks for sharing your expertise Rharley!

You know...I'm not quite sure if Wren drilled mine or not. I can ask him though.

I hard wire all my mics so I'm not sure, but I do remember the hole being really close to the size of a 1/4" jack. I would go ahead and try. If any drilling is required it would be minimal.
The transformer is tucked up in there a couple inchs so just don't go to deep with the drill (if grilling is needed) and it should work fine.
Good to hear another person using the Akia!
My favorite mic!

Thanks both. I've had a tentative disassemble, but not quite sure how to get the lead and electrics out without damage, it's quite delicate wiring and there is some stuffing in the handle.

I agree, it's a good mic with a characterful sound. Light in the hand and Hi-Z. All good. Another win for MBH, I wouldn't have know about it otherwise.

@ Mind the gap Cut the chord close to the bottom of the mic. The push the end that you cut up through the black plastic piece at the bottom. Then remove the cover at the other end and the whole thing comes out through the top. Just be careful not to bump the element and you'll be fine.

I have practiced with my ADM-8 (I have another model also that has the same element as the ADM-8) a little bit lately trying to compare it to the DM-13 and ADM is very nice sounding mic. It has a little more cut than the DM-13, but the DM-13 has huge bottom end with pretty flat frquency curve up to 8K. I think that is what most harp players would like, but I really like my ADM-8 and find myself picking up both mics every time I plug in now.
The ADM-8 has a similar sound to that old crystal mic quality.
I'm glad I bought them.
I think I'll start selling my CM collection now!

@chromaticblues - thanks for the tip. In fact I unscrewed the cable guide, and it's not clear how to fix a 1/4" socket, at least the ones I have. I don't want to botch it, so I'm going with the standard cord. I guess it will fail one day.

Interesting to hear about your ADM-8. I got an AMD-11 as a job lot with the DM-13, but the output is weak and I don't think it's much use. So you are going Akai-only?

Bump old thread.

My CM died, so my only mics is an Akai DM13. By far, the best mic ever. Huge bass and great high mids.

What I dont like about the akai is the shape. I like more a bullet mic, it feel better in my hands, plus I need a VC and a longer cable.

How can I remove the element and put it on a bullet shell? (I can get one custom zize for this mic)

I can unscrew the grill no problem, but the element itself seem like glue in the body, and I dont want to force it.

I think maybe Technobird has done a DM13 transplant to a bullet before. You might wanna ask him. you can contact him through his website.
